Idle Weekend April 1, 2016: Now We're Let's Playing with Power
osmosisch replied to Chris's topic in Idle Weekend Episodes
I agree that scores have no place in reviews. -
I couldn't get into pixel dungeon, i think i splatted like twenty characters on the slime boss, tried some guides to get past it, didn't work and never went back. I think there's just something about the combination of apparent simplicty with actual hidden complexity in this case that doesn't work for me. I prefer things the other way around if anything.

The Prague Cemetery is by far the worst of Eco's books that I have read. It felt like a kind of weird, weak redo fo Foucault's Pendulum.

Designer Notes 17: Ananda Gupta
osmosisch replied to Soren Johnson's topic in Designer Notes Episodes
Lovely discussion. Thanks! Are there any women coming on soon? The sausagefest is beginning to bother me a bit. -
I think Sacrifice is the most notable game that I go back and play again regularly because nothing has improved on it in the intervening years. Man, I love that game.

I understand. For short projects and such like this it can make sense to go above & beyond for a short period. I don't think that makes it OK to glorify that kind of thing, or frame it as normal. And yeah, of course it's different for a small outfit - but not in all ways. If through cultural osmosis this is the way all small studios operate, it makes it harder and harder for anyone to get into gamedev as a career while living a 'normal' life. Anyway I'm sorry to add a sour note to what looks like a lovely moment for you. Congratulations again.

This sounds really cool, but I'm also quite sad about all the 'person X hasn't slept in days' toxic crunch BS.

The Division - Tom Clancy Presents Ubisoft's Tom Clancy's The Division, By Ubisoft
osmosisch replied to Badfinger's topic in Video Gaming
I assume it's pretty much this: https://killscreen.com/articles/the-perverse-ideology-of-the-division/ But I'd also be interested in hearing you expand, Dragonfliet, -
Yeah, it's been bewildering to say the least. This article is so good: http://www.pointandclickbait.com/2016/04/but-shes-got-a-new-hat/ Also I think JP's take is good: https://twitter.com/vectorpoem/status/715948891292585984

Congrats man! That's great to hear. Welcome back.

Satellite Reign made me realise I'm not actually super into Syndicate style gameplay, and that game had a lot of interesting systems on top of it. This looks beautiful but not my cup of tea gameplay-wise. Also I'm definitely over killing innocent bystanders.

The Division - Tom Clancy Presents Ubisoft's Tom Clancy's The Division, By Ubisoft

I'm just not going to buy it because I know I'd do the same. Self-defence against cognitive dissonance. -
It's been one of my favourite films since I first saw it. Besides the plot stuff, one of the things I found very noteworthy is how it seemed to me obviously strongly influenced by Half-life 2.
-
Agreed. Knowing I'm not going to hear Sean regularly again as a result of a decision rather than just being busy or something like that makes me actually resent his absence a lot more than the vague sense of anticipation I had before

Jesus christ dude take a chill pill.

I've been f2ping it up in Summoners War which I find very entertaining. The battle system is deep enough what with upgrading and equipping your monsters that there's always plenty of little decisions to make. Haven't felt the urge to spend money yet, they're pretty generous with all the currency.

Idle Thumbs 254: Welltris and Wetrix
osmosisch replied to Jake's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
I have to take a bit of umbrage with Chris' framing of people's dislike of the corpses in Darkest Dungeon as 'insane' - I get that he was trying to talk about the reaction to the reaction more than the reaction itself, but the way he talked about it made me feel like a bad person for hating that change. e: it really killed my enjoyment of the game. Instead of fixing their design they inserted this weird garbage stopgap patch that makes no sense whatsoever. -
You have a margin of like 3 HP so yeah there's some luck involved, but I knocked that one out in like 20 tries so it's not super hard (or I got real lucky).

I love Card Crawl. I'm not good at it though which might help.

Idle Weekend March 11, 2016: Buried Treasure
osmosisch replied to Rob Zacny's topic in Idle Weekend Episodes
I found this: http://crateandcrowbar.com/2014/04/11/episode-037-right-in-the-stamen/ At time 12:30 they talk about it. They do mention it's a callback to earlier discussion but their archives are basically impossible to navigate for me. Aha, found it http://crateandcrowbar.com/2014/01/25/episode-026-tug-yourself-askance/ time mark 1:25:00 -
Goddamit, that's where I know that name from! Amazing.

Idle Weekend March 11, 2016: Buried Treasure

That reminds me of a story i heard on one of the podcasts I listen to (I want to say Crate and Crowbar?), where apparently the developers made the alien literally speka its mind for debugging purposes like "I'm going to check this closet now" etc. And the resulting product was called Alan: Isolation. Might be apocryphal but it cracks me up every time I think about it. -
