I agree with all that you wrote. The opening "twist" is good, and a clever way to do the tutorial. One of the things I love about the game is how well it grounds you in the setting, and like you said I think the RPG sections do help with that. You mentioned the voice acting too, and that is one of the best aspects of the game. The voice work in Riddick honestly puts most other games to shame (Dark Athena is actually even better in that regard), and Riddick's one liners are quite endearing. Another thing is how unique everything feels, from the very wide FoV and laser pointer crosshair, to the weird mix of game systems. Sometimes it's nice to play something that so clearly doesn't follow a blueprint set by other games. Even when things aren't perfect they still feel very deliberately designed in a way that I appreciate. Also, that mech mini-boss is bad I agree, I remember complaining about it too.

That's a shame Tycho :/ Yeah I think the "HD" version only comes when you buy Assault on Dark Athena, it's the 2009 release. If you can't get it running you can download my GoG version if you want (I mean you already bought it once).

You guys are bumming me out. I don't even like stealth games and even coming to it late I think Riddick is one of the best FPSes I've played (not the expansion though). I think it's totally valid to quit any game an hour in if you're not enjoying it, but I will say that Riddick is a game that switches things up a lot in a Half-Life 2 like way. It's not a game where you play a little bit of it and are able to from that extract what the rest of the game will be like. That is one of the key strengths of its campaign. The pure stealth sections make up a quite small part of the game. How far did you get in terms of progression? I would recommend perhaps playing it on easy though, mostly because of the mêlée combat, which I don't think it's balanced well. I do recall though that the difficulty can be switched at any time, so it's also possible to turn it down just for those segments.

Let us know if you translate it, now I'm curious to read it.

I often find myself thinking along the lines that things shouldn't have been made. Generally speaking I'm not a fan of sequels. For example, I said after playing Dark Souls that I kinda wish they wouldn't make any direct sequels, because the game stands so well on its own and any attempt to continue it will almost inevitably fall short (even if it manages to improve some aspects). It's not that I want to deprive anyone (or myself) of the experience of having played Dark Souls 2 & 3, it's that I think retreads like that are fundamentally less interesting and as From showed with Bloodborne, starting fresh usually gives something more memorable. If you want to continue a great thing, you should have an equally great reason to. I understand that not everyone shares this opinion, plenty of people want things that never end, and are happy to retreat the same territory with ever diminishing returns. Personally I find works whose primary value consists in evoking some previous work to themselves be of little value. I don't know where ME:A falls on this spectrum, so I'm not making a judgement there. I understand the perspective though.

The inevitable happened: AI can now play Go
eot replied to riadsala's topic in Strategy Game Discussion
Damn, shodan? That's impressive. How long have you been playing for? -
Yeah, when I heard they were taking it down I figured that I might as well download it. However, for (im)practical reasons my PS4 used to be in a room with wifi connectivity equivalent of a 56k modem. I left it on, figuring it would finish downloading eventually, but I guess it timed out at some point and paused. By the time I noticed it was too late, so it sat half downloaded in my library for two years. It always irked me a little. I read about this trick last year, but I haven't had a PC to use as a proxy until this weekend. My sis is going to use my PS4 to play ME:A though, so I won't actually get to try PT for yet another while haha. But at least it's there now. Similar story for you?
-
After like 2 hours of fiddling I finally got that thing working, and now I'm actually downloading PT. Pretty exciting, even though I'm not really interested in the game as anything other than forbidden fruit.

They announced development in late 2012, so they probably started a bit before that. Let's say 4.5 years then, it's somewhat beside the point. With DA2, and to some extent ME3 (which was supposed to come out in 2011), there was an issue with EA forcing short development schedules. Both DA:I and ME:A appear to be reactions to that. In this case it doesn't seem to have paid off, and that worries me because this team combined with a short dev cycle bodes even worse for the series. That could certainly have been an issue, but it doesn't explain poor writing or wonky animations in my opinion. I think the phenomena of fresh satellite studios making worse games than the main studios is quite well established. I don't say that to crap on the Montreal studio, making games like this is insanely hard. It just doesn't surprise me. Off the top of my head I can't really think of any studio that's knocked it out of the park with their first game. Maybe some upstart led by very experienced designers and producers.
-
It shouldn't be surprising that a new studio can't deliver the same standard as a well established one. I understand if Edmonton wanted to work on something new. This just feels like a shame though, the series deserves better. It's not like EA can respond by giving them more time for the sequel. They got five years for this one.

I can't remember and I know you're not literally doing every FPS ever, but did you try Project I.G.I.?

The inevitable happened: AI can now play Go
eot replied to riadsala's topic in Strategy Game Discussion
Nah, I know. Most of that stuff is way over my head, but I still enjoy them every now and they also have a motivational effect. So far I've been trying to review the games I play on my own (beginner mistakes are so obvious that even beginners see them in hindsight), but I've gotten two or three reviews from other people. I also decided to document my learning process with the game. Played my two first 19x19 games today. Surprisingly I won both! -
Mass Effect 2 (maybe the others as well) also had weird, hidden away tutorial videos.

John Walker doesn't seem to happy with the early parts of the game. It's John Walker though.

The inevitable happened: AI can now play Go

A year later and I finally decided to start playing, only done about 15 9x9 games and one 13x13 game. I'll get to the 19x19 board eventually! Also, over new years AlphaGo apparently played ~60 online games against top pros. The American Go Association have started putting out commentaries on the games. I enjoy this guy's videos as well -
Maybe I'll give Unreal II a go some day, I remember playing the demo but that's it.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild: open your eyes and die a lot
eot replied to eRonin's topic in Video Gaming
I half wish I understood why people like these games so much. Seeing the aggregate scores for Zelda baffles and fascinates me every time. Is it just the ultimate nostalgia trip or something? Like I said, I don't get it. Good for the people who like 'em though. -
I was going to be a pedant and point out that it's not an umlaut, but a diaeresis. Then I clicked the link and saw that the article does that in the second paragraph. I still write naïve from time to time though.

Official Giant Bomb Thread Mostly for Complaining About Dan
eot replied to tegan's topic in Idle Banter
When I say apolitical I mean not commenting on the politics of things regardless of whether or not the game in question falls into the dominant narrative or not. For example, you could be part of a minority and not bring up the lack of representation of your minority in games; I would call that apolitical. But sure, many people would consider that act to be very political in and of itself, and as middle class white men they of course don't very often find themselves in situations where they'd be the aggrieved party and feel a need to speak out. I don't feel like GB shy away from having those conversations though, I just think they don't look for them. In any case, I think there's a place for the kind of content they do. If they were to choose to be more political they'd certainly lose part of their audience who doesn't want to hear that stuff, and someone else would fill the void. At least they speak up when it's really needed.- 1367 replies

If it's not commenting on the politics of the content in question then I don't see why it has to be written from a certain political perspective. I get why you think not commenting is inherently political, but that's a different issue. Personally I feel like I'm already exposed to the politics of the US more than I need to, considering I don't live there, so I'm fine with them not talking about politics. The media outlets that do don't tend to focus on the issues I care the most about anyway.- 1367 replies

You guys post such good photos, it's a bit intimidating hah. I don't have my own camera right now, but I got to borrow a DSLR for a few minutes and I managed to take some lab pictures that I like.

I don't like them either, and I would even say they've gotten progressively worse. However, I actually enjoyed Leigh Alexander's drunken ramblings about sexy SS uniforms. Never quite got why her appearance became such a big deal.- 1367 replies

Nick Plays FROM; Currently - Bloodborne

I was hoping he'd have that happen to him. Also, I've never mistakenly done a gesture in all my time with the game. I dunno what the hell Nick is doing with his controller. edit: chat needs to get Nick that damn Kirkhammer! -

Double post, but what time does the stream usually start?
