Idle Weekend April 24, 2017: Cull Your Frustums
jennegatron replied to Chris's topic in Idle Weekend Episodes
I mean those comments are representative of a dismissive attitude common in lots of tech spaces though. It's not uncommon for technically trained people look down their noses at the uninitiated and to decide you're not a real fan/member of a community because you don't pass through the made up gate they're maintaining. I don't particularly care for Kuchera, but I think his assessment of the situation, even if it is an over-generalization is fair. I think it's representative and indicative of overall trends of disdain for those less familiar with technical approaches to solving problems. http://www.polygon.com/2017/4/18/15340296/horizon-zero-dawn-kotaku-developer-backlash Here's the article for anyone who missed it. It's super common to dump on the excitement or interest other people show in things, especially for interest in big name titles, and I wish it would stop. It's okay to like things and be interested in things and saying that no one at Kotaku knows how games are made is a bad look. -

dium - did you play Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE? That is top to bottom exploring Shibuya. -
I played this for the first time with the release of the remaster. The only positive thing I really have to say about it is: I'm glad it's short.

Thimbleweed Park: A new adventure game from Ron Gilbert & Garry Winnick!

Hint below: Explicit solution if you're still stuck: -
I like that they're experimenting with story telling tools and format. TAZ is my favorite podcast, and they would have to work pretty hard to make something I wouldn't enjoy thoroughly, I think.

I definitely want to reserve my judgment till I finish the show. So far it's compelled me to keep watching, being slowed down only by the need to have, so far, two episodes prescreened for my own psychological well being. I have never personally dealt with depression or suicidal thoughts/idealation. I will be interested to read a bunch of these essays when I finish, from people much more adept at traversing these topics than me. I'll also look into how it differs from the book it's based on. I'm still very much interested in watching more, and (episode 10 spoilers) Tony & Jeff - best characters, love them.

I grew up in IL and went to college in the Twin Cities, so hearing that there's less of a Midwestern sensibility to the show is kind of disappointing. I hadn't really planned on watching them in part because I thought this (lack of Minnesota jokes) would be true, but I was hoping someone would say otherwise. I am glad they're good though. Watching MST3K with my dad was a formative comedic experience and a lack of jokes about Perkins makes me sad. tangentially related unpopular opinion -
My very nice boyfriend watched episode 9 without me and was nice enough to take note of the particularly long/intense scenes' timestamps So if you're watching episode 9 and are concerned here's what I have to say about the ep If anyone wants more details feel free to let me know. I used these particular scene guides and got through the episode without issue. For episode 11

Thimbleweed Park: A new adventure game from Ron Gilbert & Garry Winnick!

Cory & I finished playing this today. Now we can start on Persona 5! I think p&c adventure games are a genre best suited to playing with someone else. It helps so much at diffusing the frustration that comes with them. -
I like Jim Sterling.

Idle Thumbs 306: Nick Breckons: 1, Mackle: More
jennegatron replied to Jake's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
I was in marching band in high school and our drumline had a Brett and a Brent on it and our midwestern accents didn't differentiate the two names enough to be understood so Brent went by 'Squatch' because he has a lot of body hair and is hairy like a Sasquatch. Everyone would call Brett 'Señor' because Spanish was his favorite class in school. -

Cory & I have been playing this together and I like it more than the Tim Schafer p&c adventures (Grim Fandango, Broken Age & Day of the Tentacle) that I've played tbh. This has been really good at avoiding the adventure game logic that these games fall into so often. So far, there have been no cat mustaches. The jokes aren't particularly funny to me, but they also don't bother me at all. I don't like the verb wheel & I don't like that there's no clear/easy way to skip past dialogue you've already seen if you talk to someone about the same thing more than once accidentally. It's been pleasant to play through and there are some well designed vaguely unsettling moments that were very effective for me. -
I watched the first 2 or 3 seasons and I thought it was really good. It's basically the only HBO drama I've watched that hooked me enough to keep me coming back for more than a handful of episodes.

I read all the books but after the 2nd movie I quit the series. They just did nothing for me. Wizard People, Dear Reader is obviously the best entry in the series. I'm totally with you on 5 being an angsty bummer (based on my memories of the book) I very much enjoyed your write-ups : )

Thanks for the response notanimal. That particular topic is just particularly psychologically damaging for me, so I may ask my bf watch it w/o me and have him mark when it happens in the episode so that I can skip past it, because I really do want to see how the rest of the show plays out. If I end up doing that, I'll post the timestamps in this thread as well in case anyone would want them in the future.
