It's interesting to me the professions that are and aren't widely unionized. Like IBEW, the plumbers and pipefitters union, teachers unions, and state employee unions are all common, but other professions are much less unionized. If your profession is not minimum wage (like food service) and predates the red scare, it's fairly likely there's a union, otherwise not so much. The workers at my mom's old job wanted to unionize and she was convinced that paying dues would just be lining some anonymous fat cat's pockets rather than negotiating for better work conditions more time off and all around better treatment.

Quitter's Club: Don't be ashamed to quit the game.
jennegatron replied to Tanukitsune's topic in Video Gaming
Bought and played a bunch of Read Only Memories today. Quit when the resolution of the game became a bullshit minigame. Don't care about the story enough to try more than twice especially when I have to sit through repeated slow ass dialogue. Fuck you ROM. -
I played all of costume quest 2 yesterday since it was seasonally appropriate and I had bought it months ago when it was on sale on the Playstation store. I liked it! I'm still missing a couple costumes, but I won't go back.

http://www.reuters.com/article/2015/10/07/us-usa-pumpkin-shortage-idUSKCN0S122S20151007 primarily it's a result of the weather in Illinois this summer. carving pumpkins didn't get hit as hard as pie pumpkins, but it was a soggy summer that ended in a reduced crop. on a related note, i just now realized that pumpkin patches aren't a thing people go to really other places!

seconded on the casper mattress. we have one and I like it. I'm not particularly sensitive to sleeping surface though, so if you are, ymmv. i also very much like nature box! (hulu has added a second tier of paid subscription that puts ads only at the beginning and end, never in the middle, but it's still not ideal)

If SAM could be considered a "Computer Employee" http://www.dol.gov/whd/overtime/fs17e_computer.htm he would be considered an OT exempt employee. However, you are right Bjorn, that being salaried doesn't mean that you aren't entitled to overtime and employers do try to pull that shit all the time.

I am a donor for Maximum Fun which I think is a really great way to support the 3 shows on the network that I listen to (Judge John Hodgman, My Brother My Brother & Me, and The Adventure Zone). I'll probably up my contribution come pledge drive season in the spring to $10 a month now that I make more than I did last time around. They are still ad supported, but I feel good about pitching in $5 each month, especially since that was magnified by a bunch of match donors that contribute more for each new & upgrading donor that signs up during the pledge drive, which I did in the 2015 drive. They also do a good job, during the pledge drive, to not try and shame listeners into contributing more than they can afford, and encourage people to contribute enough to get cool rewards. You also get to select the shows you listen to so the money actually goes to the people you like, with some going to the organization Max Fun for all the operational & hosting costs, as well as the cost of developing new shows.

Yeah, in a situation like this, what would likely happen is if you threatened legal action, they would just say "well as a salaried employee, you're overtime exempt anyway, and we don't have to pay you anything extra anyway, so we just won't going forward."

For those of you who aren't familiar, Justin & Griffin McElroy used WWE for Monster Factory and the Pebble is maybe my favorite creation, although it is nearly impossible to choose.

My high school had/has? a liaison officer. He helped me recover an iPod that was stolen on school grounds, and I think was a resource to break up the average of 2 - 3 fights we had a week, but I never saw him put his hands on a student. Mostly it was teachers & hall monitors responsible for physically breaking up fights.

I created an extra channel for sports on the idle thumbs readers slack because I know some people do not like them! Come talk to me about basketball! Or talk about the world series, if you managed to stay awake!

Matt Fraction's fairly short run on Hawkeye avoids that supervillian loop.

For those of you in the San Francisco Area, Double Fine will be showing day of the tentacle at Day of the Devs in a couple weeks as well: http://dayofthedevs.com/

Mobile is hyper restricted with the free service. You aren't allowed to listen to albums straight through, they must be shuffled, at least in the US.
-
I don't know if you were listening on mobile or desktop, there are slightly different interactions available to you on each. Also I'm not sure the restrictions specific to locations other than the US.

I like that giphy exists. I turned off the auto preview for all images/tweets/links though, not because of giphy but instead i was tired of youtube videos and stuff absorbing so much space.

For the record I agree pretty strongly with aoanla, and I think the more precision we allow language the easier conversations become and the better we understand the context in which something fits. I don't really want to contribute much more than that, and I don't think that most people agree with me in this case. The. "walking simulator"/"this isn't a game, it's garbage" comments outside of this community may have just tainted the waters of this discussion too thoroughly to be very productive.

Nintendo Network ID Exchange Thread

I openly laughed at your username of "DiaperDawg" so thank you. I think it's the spelling of 'dawg' that sold it for me. -
Badfinger, I find that even setting alarms for myself a couple times a day (12pm & 3pm) that encourage me to get up and walk around the office complex a couple times I feel a lot better. It's not a full workout, but it definitely helps me clear my head, refocus, and I feel better about not being stationary all day. It gets harder when it's cold/snowy out, like it inevitably where you are, but it's something to consider?

David Lynch's Josh Brolin's Campo Santo's Fire Watch With Me: A Motion Picture Event
jennegatron replied to TychoCelchuuu's topic in Video Gaming
I would, no second thoughts, drop up to $45 on Firewatch. Up to probs $120 for a collectors/special physical edition. Sean has said elsewhere (including the firewatch subreddit) that it won't be AAA $60 priced, but I would probably still buy it at that price (or higher), maybe I might think about it for a couple minutes though. -
Idle Thumbs 232: Happy #DishonoredHalloween

The email about Jam Master Dad was my favorite. Dads & Moms playing f2p games are the best. (My parents have multiple duplicate facebook accounts to allow themselves to gift themselves more lives in Candy Crush.) -

Marlon James won the Man Booker prize today for his Brief History of Seven Killings! http://t.co/nKLZDpQDyA Here he talks about in an appearance on Seth Meyers http://t.co/PlsWV5iV8U here's the NYT piece on it. He's the first Jamaican author to win the prize and I'm very happy for him! (Full disclosure: I went to Macalester College, where he is an English professor. I never took a class with him, but I did once eat easter dinner with him and my boyfriend's friend's family. We gave him a ride to Edina as he doesn't drive. We had lamb and horseradish mashed potatoes and it was very good.)
