  1. Life

Being from Illinois, I tend toward making fun of Iowa and Indiana most, but I have an affection for all of the Midwest, and a great deal of the Great Plains states.
  2. Life

Sick Missouri burn. My boyfriend is from Oklahoma (which is why we were driving down I-35), so he has no room to look down on Kansas, or anyone else for that matter.

It's amazing the inter-Midwestern "that place is so flat" opinions. Wisconsin thinks Illinois is flat & everyone at least can point to Kansas and say 'at least we're not Kansas levels of flat.' My favorite thing is along I-35 you can drive by this enormous stone sign next to the interstate that says "Welcome to the Flint Hills" ( http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/fe/Flint_hills_kansas.jpg ) You can literally see the horizon in every direction, and there is not a single hill. It's amazing.
  4. Norm MacDonald doing the cleanest roast of one of the filthiest stand ups never fails to make me laugh the hardest. https://youtu.be/5F9M3L04ROM
  5. Games giveaway

I have 3 closed beta keys for Heroes of the Storm (the Blizzard Lords Management experience) for the Americas region if anyone wants them. If you already have a battle.net account, you should check to see if you already have beta access, because they may have activated your account already and you didn't even know it! They do that sometimes.
  6. Nintendo 3DS

I am still playing! (I only just got it in February, so I'm still checking in every day.)
  7. Idle Thumbs 205: LPBs and HPBs

Dota 2 having lore is pretty much the funniest thing to me because everyone knows you just jacked the characters from someone else's game. You're not fooling anyone by writing some garbage fantasy backstory to explain how Luna Moonfang the Moonrider is totally an original creation with an original backstory. (Not that I find warcraft lore particularly interesting. I'm 100% guilty of never reading WoW quest text.)
  8. Post Your Game for Playtesting and Feedback!

I've had multiple, lengthy conversations with my boyfriend about the politics of pizza ordering for a large group. One person in your group always wants hawaiian and no one ever says no because with the exception of me, who pretty much hates hot fruit, it's a fairly inoffensive pizza choice. The fruit that is censored on this board (*********) does not belong on a pizza!!!! Then the pizzas come, every one eats all the good pizza (plain cheese, pepperoni & sausage) and the 1 person who suggested hawaiian eats 1 piece, like 2 other people have single slices and you have 3/4s of a hawaiian pizza that would have been better if it was just canadian bacon!!! I have lots of pizza opinions.
  9. Super Mario Galaxy: 600%

just more proof we all aspire to be tegan.
  10. They said they were getting sent out in batches. https://twitter.com/jennegatron/status/584522691492741121 Here are mine. (Granted I live less than 2 hours from SF, so shipping times are a little less dramatic.)
  11. HOTS... no the other HOTS. The Lords Management one damn it!

Just got an email for HOTS begging me to come back. Any 4 people interested in a US region beta key? *edit: I have 4 keys. I had put one aside for a friend, but he just realized that he already had beta access.
  12. Nintendo 3DS

Honestly and truly the creepiest thing tegan. Very nicely done. I cut down all my non-fruit trees to make room for my fruit trees and now I can't have any tree easter eggs. oops. guess I'll replant some evergreens.
  13. Life

I grew up 2 1/2 hours from Chicago, so 100% of my experiences are what you take little kids to on day trips, but the Shedd Aquarium is pretty amazing if 8 year old me is to be trusted. You can do the cheesiest tourist thing and take a selfie in the Bean's reflection. Thirded on the Field Museum. Do they still have Sue the T. Rex? I remember liking the Museum of Science and Industry while there too. (My other Chicago experiences are Brookfield Zoo, seeing the Blue Man Group and going to Six Flags in Gurnee out in the 'burbs.)
  14. Sports

I went to high school with the star of the NIT champion Stanford team. My sister had a bunch of classes with him and never had anything but super positive things to say. It makes my heart sing to see a kid from my home town do so well at such a good school, where he's also made the academic conference team. My high school is very diverse but honors & AP classes very much aren't. It makes me so happy to see one of like 8 Black kids who took AP calculus between 2005 - 2011 thriving and excelling at Stanford, both in the classroom, and gaining very positive attention for his play on the court as well.
  15. Feminism

As a woman who did exactly what Argobot was describing in the final paragraph of her post, I can definitely attest to the fact that I would go past tolerating objectionable content to embracing it to make it seem like I wasn't like those other girls. I was cool and with it, and by being open to the overt sexualization of all female characters in games, as well as repeating tired sexist jokes about sandwiches and other nonsense, I was just trying to show I wasn't like those uptight harpies that men complain about. Internalized misogyny is very very powerful for women as well as men, and I think it's naive to think that women don't behave that way all the time in an effort to make men/boys accept them. They're subtle about the Scythian's gender, but it is explicitly in the text of the game. (Seconded with Argobot's second post)
  16. The terrible wallet scourge of the Amiibo.

I think what it is is that most stores have more than enough Marios, Luigis & Peaches, but the less common ones (mostly every wave since that first one) have sold out incredibly quickly. Like I was watching twitter when Rosalina was released and there was a line of people ready at Target when the doors open and they only had like 6 or 12 of those amiibos at all.
  17. The terrible wallet scourge of the Amiibo.

Oh noooooooooo We do have a Target in town... I don't know how many other weirdos in Davis are interested in these Amiibos, but I bet they exist, so I don't know if I would even have a chance at one. I'll have to sit and have a long think about how much this is worth to me.
  18. Binding of Isaac: Rebirth

No, parts of that definitely reek of 'SJW' criticisms like changing the race of a character to make it more diverse or the fat acceptance 'joke.' Some of the other parts, like the pills being replaced as lollipops could certainly be making fun of Nintendo, but on the whole it definitely reads like it's complaining about SJW and so called 'pc' culture.
  19. Cause and Direct: A Nintendo Direct Thread

I got Animal Crossing for Valentimes this year and have only missed 1 day since. I've seen at least one thumbelina online playing as well periodically in the past month as well.
  20. Meow.

This cat is interested in exactly 3 toys. 1. His tennis ball 2. His fluffy caterpillar 3. His laser pointer (not pictured)
  21. Dota Today 17: Aui_2000

(If anyone continues to be interested in the beautiful romance between Aui_2000 & Universe, Universe posted another music video yesterday.)
  22. The Big LucasArts Playthrough

Every Monday on Twitch Day9 streams an adventure game with his 2 friends from his time in grad school at USC. They played the Dig & it's delightful (they also played the Atlantis Indiana Jones game, and are currently playing Grim Fandango) If anyone wants to experience the Dig without playing it themselves, I recommend this.
  23. Dota Today 17: Aui_2000

He said in the Dota 2 subreddit that he just clicks and highlights text as he's thinking as a habit, and that that's what that frantic clicking was. http://www.reddit.com/r/DotA2/comments/305uea/aui_2000_on_playing_support_in_683c_the_poorest/cppm07d_ http://ubyssey.ca/features/our-campus-kurtis-ling-esports-dota-311/ Here's the link to the interview he referred to. He's the most adorable human, and the image of him being a janitor at a preschool is so endearing to me. I'm sad that it didn't come across to more people in this Dota Today ep.

The only mayo I like is the spicy japanese mayo that comes on top of sushi rolls. I understand why people like mayo, it's just fat and oil which is everything that tastes delicious to people. It, and most condiments, just totally gross me out.
  25. The Dancing Thumb (aka: music recommendations)

    I love this song.
