Windows 10: "It wouldn't be right to call it Windows 9."
Vainamoinen replied to Urthman's topic in Idle Banter
Solitaire timed upgrade paywalls in Windows 10? Now if it was an adorable, bullshit deflectingly cute kitten instead of Microsoft Corporation, well... ...no, no, not even then. Fuck that kitten. -
All I need is Trackmania Original on GOG.com... as cool as the new game looks, offline enjoyment and no DRM/client hassle were always the great big Trackmania things for me. Ah well.
-
No, they have a meaningless ethics policy reformation fetish.
-
Hey, maybe they start killing each other at this airplay thing.

GOG.com started selling Victor Vran today. With a bit of exclusive DLC. The DLC however must be retrieved via an in game/online login... aaaand is a one-time activation thing... by definition, DRM. The people calling GOG out on their forums for allowing DRM there are called "SJW" by some extra heated people of the community. Oh gamergate, oh gamergate.

And the reddit reaction. http://wehuntedthemammoth.com/2015/07/23/gamergaters-attack-study-on-video-game-losers-lashing-out-at-women-by-lashing-out-at-women/ Also, Dave Gilbert responds to to framerate police brutality.

That's always the question to a degree... in what way do they know what they inflict? And I'll give John Bain one thing: his appearance of complete obliviousness has never flickered one bit. Today, I've read that first Bisquit gamergate blog post in full, and I'm really not that sure anymore. It's the constant ebb and tide of first calming his followers to wait for more evidence, professing his own confusion and lack of reliable information, and then implicitly confirming the rumors by assessing the problem to be inherent in the industry, guilt to be probable or by passing summary judgement: His protests that he really doesn't want to be involved in this shitstorm are dissolved for "only" two reasons, namely ethics in journalism and, SURPRISE: Indeed, his noble fight against the Social Justice Warrior, which more than 90% of gamergate supporters name as the core reason for their being in gamergate. He embellished the "ethics" smoke screen with emeralds and diamonds AND handed gamergaters their primary enemy figure on a silver platter. Well of course that blog post sparked organized harrassment, how could it not? That guy, as much pity as I have on him, is nonetheless: an asshole.

Valve has more market share in PC games distribution than google has in search engines or Amazon has in ebooks or Apple in digital music distribution. Valve isn't just "a" monopoly. It is THE monopoly, I'm sorry. And it's very valid to point to that, because this is an absurdly shitty market situation. I've been doing that pointing for years, and refuse to use the service, far more due to this simple fact than due to DRM concerns. However, that doesn't make that article in any way worth its salt. In particular, gamergate has always veered in the direction of the monopolies and sought their support instead of making any move to antagonize the big players. Big developers and the big publisher are the dealers; gamergate supporters seldom risk attacking them and have yet to organize attacks against them in the same way indie developers are attacked. This is an un-gamergate thing to do. Electronic Arts makes exemplary "SJW games" and just loves this consumer revolt; Warner Brothers has yet to experience a real backlash for the core ethically rotten Shadow of Mordor review exclusivity contracts; Valve introduces Curator and no one talks about the conflation of press and publisher. A two person indie studio happily tweets having bribed Anita Sarkeesian with 40k$: THAT's gamergate material. The technical amenities Valve as a 1.5 billion dollar server farm provides will always be the preferred haven for a consumer revolt so incredibly scared of losing any kind of comfort in their medium. GOG didn't publish e.g. Hatred (for undisclosed reasons) to their customers' cries of censorship and direct threats of leaving for Steam, while Gabe Newell indirectly yet personally endorsed the product (!). Especially due to GOG's necessarily limited catalog range, is not unreasonable to think that in the future, the total freedom gamergate customers seek won't be found in a second hand store of 20 year old products. If GOG hopes to gain more sales by supporting gamergate ideologues, they can expect just about the same success as AMD. I saw that, and I felt so very sorry for the guy. Could you remove the link, possibly? No need to call out gamergate's jumping jacks. Those tend to get shit from fellow fighters as well.

Hopping back to the earlier topic, this guy has figured out the problem. More frame rate wisdom here. https://twitter.com/teioh

Actually, you should need more than that. No, you're not a stinker at all. You can be, ahem, enjoying these videos immensely while being critical of some aspects. Video number six asks quite an herculean task of us, one I had certainly given up in the meantime. And I'm not sure whether I can or want to respond to this call. It can make an Angry Jack out of yourself very, very quickly. And now I'm going for a run instead.

Excellent, actually. Incredibly, incredibly excellent. This guy deals out the truth in such big chunks that I am starting to draw up badges for him right this instant. As a heterosexual man, I want to kiss this guy on the mouth. Where is that patreon, dammit.

Sure. Please note that I'm largely paraphrasing up there (but accurately) https://soundcloud.com/totalbiscuit/enough

Listened to the TB response. No surprises. these people WANTED me to endorse their charity stream I've been harrassed over my cancer as well My family has been threatened, so I can't be a "serial harrasser" I only used the gamergate tag twice I never linked to the five guys video / would never spread such unsubstantiated rumors I never had an interest in Zoe Quinn, she's not important, she's nothing major I only heard about Quinn in connection with the game jam that went "famously wrong" I was called a misogynist bigot after I "barely mentioned this woman's name" I only wanted to talk about ethics in game journalism I'm annoyed with Anita Sarkeesian because she puts the violence (!) in video games back into focus I've been called transphobic on no grounds whatsoever OTHER people want to make everything political Other people don't know how it is to be scrutinized for every little mistake you make. They have no idea. Anyone famous is harrassed online I have two million followers on youtube, bitch "gamergate is two sides" that "claim to be against each other" I have all the sympathy in the world for John Bain's condition, really. No one should suffer from cancer, absolutely no one. But that doesn't give Bain the right to make video game culture toxic, I'm sorry. I'm not sure what part of "journalist ethics" Bain talked about when he called Leigh Alexander an alcoholic on twitter. I'm not sure how Bain thought himself in any way distant from the gamergate movement when he actively coached them to be less gamergatey via an "anonymous" reddit post. Or promoted a techraptor gamergate hitlist that notably mentioned Dina Abou Karam, certainly one of the most undeserved gamergate targets to date. Sure, "serial harrasser" is harsh. But it doesn't NOT apply, man. The whole four minutes on not even being interested in Zoe Quinn, those I would assess to be deeply untruthful. Here's what gamergate outlet knowyourmeme.com (yes, they are that) has to say on the matter. Please, this needs to be in the history books. N4G publishes unsubstantiated, harrassing rumors, article's blissfully taken down... and one day later John Bain starts accusing Quinn, adding other unsubstantiated rumors to the already purported unsubstantiated rumors. This pile of fabricated nonsense had, unsurprisingly, a rabble rousing effect on the reddit mobs. Organized harrassment started there which was subsequently deleted. Which TotalBiscuit vocally condemned as censorship, resulting in an even greater rabble rousing effect. Now, seriously, isn't it entirely fair to say that John Bain had purposefully taken ample part in enabling and encouraging the gamergate cultural suicide here? John Bain was a front row agitator in this, I'm sad to say. Here's Bain, back in November, talking at length about "uninteresting" Zoe Quinn and the oh so important alleged breach of journalist ethics (taken from under a youtube video that shows an Ashly Burch interview regarding gamergate). Note his total lack of research, the unashamed characterisation of gamergate as an insult revenge fantasy, the repeated mentioning of Zoe Quinn's name (her stalker remains blissfully anonymous here) and indeed Bain's spreading of unsubstantiated rumors. Many things bear repeating in connection to this kind of utter history falsification. One of them is that Bain seems to rely on Gjoni's word regarding the positive coverage of Depression Quest without reading those articles himself. Another is that the "infamous" Game Jam factually "went wrong" because Quinn and others vocally resisted the detrimental influence of sponsor Pepsi. In other words, a clear cut anti corruption effort is being characterised everywhere as evidence of corruption. Thanks, Bain! I'm personally tired of gamergate ideologues like John Bain claiming that, because of the movement being "leaderless", there would be no one to blame for the daily harrassment. I blame the ones who create that toxic culture regardless whether they consider themselves "being part" of gamergate or not. I blame John Bain, Milo Yiannopoulos, Christina Hoff Sommers, Roosh V and all his reaxxion scriberlings, key harrasser Eron Gjoni, Ralph from the retort, the Honey Badgers, Sargon of Akkad with his all his fantastic, yet disproven conspiracy theories and the clownery of Davis Aurini and Jordan Owen. These people are driving gamergate ideology, their words are important to gamergate supporters. And that accusation is quite easy to make looking at their histories, websites, retweets and followers. GOG opens the announcement of the Biscuit selection with "Love him or hate him, TotalBiscuit is a force to be reckoned with." Certainly, I reckon with TotalBiscuit and his two million followers! But I neither love nor hate the guy. Like Jim Sterling, I "don't consider him the devil". But the harm he's done is very visible. What GOG now needs to do is to quickly have another sale featuring Anita Sarkeesian or, better yet, Leigh Alexander (who would certainly put back the o in GOG). Because right now, they're sitting in the pile of shit that John Bain is unfortunately dragging along with his royal ass.

A gamergate hitlist, correct, and many do exist. Like this one. http://deepfreeze.it/journo.php (And, of course, "walking simulator" does the very same crap, it's just a meaningless derogatory tag. Objectively reviewed, all of those games. The baincurated list just gets the traction that comes with his popularity name recognition. An abuse of power, doubtlessly. John Bain thrives on his toxicity, that's obvious.) In related news, Rowan Kaiser of IGN/AV Club called out Bain and GOG on twitter, resulting in a long ranting soundcloud "answer" from Bain, which I'll hopefully get to review later today. Jim Sterling has been tweeting in Bain's support.

Yes, I see, I see! Protection, I've heard that before! In protect game developers to make the game they really want. All the authority of the police, yet zero moral compass. Bisquit and his minions ruling with an iron fist.

TB's reaction in full: Total clearly speaks out against this, commendable certainly, but as others have noticed, he's trying to keep a movement in check that he himself created. He should rather give up the Curator channel. Heck, Curator should be abandonned as a massive conflation of press and publisher anyway. As usual, John Bain remains oblivious of factually having organized the protest of largely imbecile consumers, dare I say, hyper consumers. So this really is all TB101 here. These channels are implemented by Steam to garner SUPPORT for certain games, not as a shitlist for some with a rather arbitrary trait that may ruin fun in some high speed 3D applications, but certainly not in 2D turn based card games like Guild of Dungeneering. In other words, the abuse happens right there.

Or an attempt at uniting what definitely doesn't want to be united. Y'know, the Mark Kern kind of 'heal the rift'. I've mostly kept out of it, but could not resist commenting on TB advertising "Dreamfall 1 + 2" in his promo video. Calling The Longest Journey "Dreamfall 1", that's a bit like calling the "Buffy" series "Angel 1". Had Anita Sarkeesian made that mistake, a thousand angry gamergate supporters would immediately commence ripping those imaginary gamer diplomas off her walls. And, of course, judging from the frequency with which TB's minions are pestering Ragnar Tørnquist's twitter with the SJW this the SJW that, it really is a joke that TB's supposedly advertising Ragnar's games.

Three part takedown piece on Randi Harper, that's all I'm saying. But, hey, he can dump on gawker all he likes.
-
...and Eron Gjoni in his twitter comments, backseat driving gamergate outrage as usual. Am I wrong, or is that yet another violation of his restraining order? Can someone finally lock that guy up?

It isn't surprising. Aurini wants his stuff to be out earlier than Owen's, but has been slacking off to get more money... so he just publishes whatever he has at the moment. That of course lessens the impact the later movie will have, which has become irrelevant for Aurini, yet not for Owen, who seems to live that ridiculous party line. I'd laugh about the self sabotage, but they've been going at that for months now, so there's not even an impact in that. What the heck, maybe David Futrelle can milk some fun out of this (edit: All right, he did ). The audio particularly e.g. in the Honey Badger segment is absurdly bad. Jesus, for 70,000 bucks, you'd think you'd get a proper mic. That is, if the money's spent on the movie, of course. I'm also particularly disappointed that they haven't made even the slightest effort to sound in any way more coherent or credible than usual. It's not the kind of bullshit you'd even want to disprove or argue against. It's just bullshit, it smells really bad and you'd rather put your nose elsewhere. So, Aurini has his probably final version out! On to the same crap with Owen's voiceover.

Indeed... "the right to have sex"... is it in the US constitution somehow, I wonder, an amendment maybe? Because we don't seem to have anything like it over here. Dammit.
-
Do you have a source for that? I'm struggling to find one that's not the Roosh V forums.

That's good to know... I was just about to write an email to them. Still, GOG might not want that logo to feature as proudly on the site... Obviously, it is used there to signal GOG's support for their ideology. As if. GOG's been really, really careful not to misstep and keep out of that whole mess. Notably, they're still cooperating with John Bain, but also follow e.g. Wil Weaton on twitter. And occasionally, well, shit happens to them. On the whole, I really think GOG shouldn't be under scrutiny in gamergate related matters when Valve is not... it's obvious what service actually benefits here.

Kern stands for irresponsible, bloated, desperately AAA wannabe game development. He's core indie now, but I guess he just can't accept it. Maybe he's on his way out of game development. Then again, that doesn't stop him from being a gamergate ideologue. Looking back, I'm still surprised how readily the gamergate crowd has accepted him after an initial strong dislike. Seems like all you have to do for acceptance is to continuously harrass people on twitter. The irony.
