  1. The Big VR Thread

Just like that, there's 3 new VR headsets just over the horizon. Thoughts. Oculus Quest: 449€ for 64GB version, 549€ for 128GB, ships: May 22 I think the Quest might be kind of a BIG DEAL. Self-contained, easy to use device with lots of great games. If any of these devices are going to take VR mainstream, this is the one. Oculus Rift S: 449€, ships: May 22 I'm not so sure about this one. A step forward from Rift in some ways, a step back in others. No external sensors means less cables and setup, but it might also mean less accurate tracking, especially when you swing your arms behind your back. Valve Index: 1079€, ships: latest June 28th If Valve are ever gonna release one of those 3 BIG VR TITLES they've been talking about, now would be the time. Not about to shell out of for this one, even though it looks like a decent step forward, but I look forward to seeing what new software comes along with it.
  2. This is turning into the Horizon Zero Dawn pile-on thread, but yeah I didn't like the characters either. Most of all Aloy herself. She's just too perfect. She's supposed to be this outcast but in all her interactions with people she's the smartest and most emotionally intelligent person in the room. A character with no flaws is just boring as hell. Even tho I didn't like GoW, at least they made Kratos feel like a real person, with real flaws. The moment that endeared me most to him wasn't any of the badass fight scenes he's in, but when he tells a story to his son.
  3. Another Red Redemption, Dead

Finished the main story last Thursday and the epilogue a few days later. Initially a bit disappointed that the epilogue (or the epilogue to the epilogue, for that matter) didn't feature Anyway, after that disappointment wore off I really enjoyed the epilogue, perhaps even more than the main story. It's much more focused and straightforward. Anyway, after the end credits rolled I wanted to let our hero settle down and take it easy, but I wasn't prepared to give up on my ramblin' ways, so I booted up the Red Dead Online, and thus begun... The Adventures of Loretta (and Lil' Horsey) So far I'm really enjoying Online, tho I don't interact with other players much, I'm mostly just treating it as an extension of the SP, doing missions on my own. The story isn't overlapping with the RDR2 story in any way I've noticed, but I was glad to see some familiar faces from RDR1 that don't show up in the main story.
  4. Oh I got a lot of these. From the past few years: Uncharted 4 - Played Uncharted 3 first, liked it a lot. Then 2, which felt kinda stale in comparison. Never played the first game. When 4 rolled around I mainly played it because of how much I'd loved The Last Of Us and wanted to see what Naughty Dog would do next. It never grabbed me. I dragged myself through the entire story, bored the whole time. In retrospect, I think one Uncharted game was enough for me, should've stopped after the first one. Horizon Zero Dawn - Yeah yeah it's pretty and competently made and all that, but it just feels like a repeat of a dozen other open world stealth-action games I've played in the past. Also the human stealth-bits aren't as good as in most other games of this style, and I'm not really into the whole monster hunter aspect of it. Dead Cells - It looks great and has been hyped to hell and back, but I'm just not feeling it, man. I don't think this kinda Spelunky-esque procedurally generated platformer thingy is my kinda thing. Speaking of which... Spelunky - Yeah I didn't like this either. God Of War - It's just that I don't like the combat and I don't like the parts inbetween the combat. I do like the characters tho, but not enough to keep playing, so after I failed the big round elevator-bit like 4 times in a row I was like fuuuuuuuck this and uninstalled.
  5. I initially just thought it was some kinda youtube-content-creating joke-game, but the more I see of it it does actually appear to have some tactical depth. I wanna play it myself now. RE:Tactics/Strategy: I really should've called the thread "looking for turn based tactics games", as that's what I'm more into.
  6. Half-Life 3

Y'know Valve just announced a new VR headset that'll be releasing in June AND they've been talking about THREE BIG VR GAMES they're working on. It's not inconceivable that at least one of them will release alongside the new headset. We could very well be getting a new Valve game in June. I mean, probably not HL3, and it is in VR, but still. It's something.
  7. Recently completed video games

I also finished this after picking it up in the current Humble Monthly. I like the setting and characters and mostly the gameplay as well, but the XCOM style random dice rolls usually send me into fits of rage so I made the wise decision early on to turn the difficulty down to Normal. This also makes the characters special abilities and health get reset after every encounter which meant I could use Bormin's hog rush ability to knock down enemies and thus easily silently take down lone enemies. On the other hand this turned the stealth-bits into a real chore of just endlessly repeating the same boring, safe, procedure over and over. In the end tho, yeah, I liked this game. Other recently finished games: Spider-Man - yeah, it was great. Rats, Bats, And Bones - a tower defence game that I got ridiculously engrossed in. Loved it. Thy Sword - Arcadey hack n slash platformer with some neat mechanics. What Remains Of Edith Finch - Wonderful. Sharpshooter3D - this one I gotta post the trailer for, I mean just look at this. Is it the most punk rock game you've ever laid your eyes on or what? It's so ugly and violent that it takes on a unique beauty of its own. When I saw it on Steam I knew I must play it. I couldn't quite figure out what its politics where while playing it, but after finishing I kept seeing it referred to as an ANTIFA game, and yeah, that makes sense.
  8. IT'S THE QUARTERLY HENKE'S TBS GAMING UPDATE Frozen Synapse 2 I played the singleplayer campaign for like 30 hours but got bored before the end. Didn't even get around to the MP. Eh... it was fine tho. I like a lot of what they've done with the open world structure, but it was also crazy complex and I had to look up a lot of stuff online that the game didn't tell me about. I don't know. If you haven't played Frozen Synapse, play the first one. If you've played FS1 and want more, yeah, check this out, but maybe wait for a sale. Valkyria Chronicles 4 Definitely on the easy end of the TBS games spectrum, and it's also got some quite annoying design decisions, with the menus and upgrade-trees taking way too long to do anything in. Despite that, I loved it. One of my fave games of last year. Even though it's easy, the story really manages to make you feel the struggle your squad is going through, and the characters are wonderful. Just started playing Mutant Year Zero: Road To Eden, it's heavy on XCOM-style random-dice-rolley bullshit, so I'm playing on the lowest difficulty, and mostly managing to enjoy it without screaming at my computer too much.
  9. Amazing thread title. Also I'm not gonna play this.
  10. Modest Tech: The NX Generation (Nintendo Switch)

Not to start another Pizza Tonight debacle, but... (skip to 2:05) When Toadette clears a level she is saying "He-heee! Who cares!", right?
  11. Half-Life 3

Having Half-Life 3 as one of your favourite games is very defiant.
  12. [Released] Palpable Dreams

Just played with this for half an hour. It's really something.
  13. [Released] A Thousand Dormant Machines

    I built the chocolate! Yay.
  14. [Released] Palpable Dreams

Great work as usual Nappi. Slick presentation and really mesmerizing gameplay. Now I kinda wanna try to make something like this in VR. A thing where you shape the flow of particles drifting through the air by waving your hands around could be suuuuuuuper trippy.
  15. This is freakin' sublime! I don't wanna say anything lest I spoil anything, EVERYONE JUST GO PLAY IT NOW! My highest score was 27.
  16. Netflix Originals

So this POLAR thing, eh? I'm kinda surprised by the huge divide between critics and user-scores on this one. It has a 18% on metacritic, but 7.0 from users, and a 6.4 on imdb. It's a film where Mads Mikkelsen plays a retired hitman who gets pulled back in for oooone laaaast jooooob. Based on a comic book. Directed by Jonas Åkerlund who is best known as a musicvideo director(Madonna's "Ray Of Light", and Prodigy's "Smack My Bitch Up" are among his more well-known videos). I watched it when it came out on Friday, and... it's kinda all over the place. It has all these weird characters, like it's trying to be funny, but without actually having any jokes. Kinda feels like it's trying to be a bizarro-John Wick. The actionscenes aren't Wick-level or anything, but they were still pretty entertaining. The tone is all over the place, from goofy to grim, but Åkerlund is no Tarantino, so it just feels weird. Mads was good, and had some nice little character-moments here and there. Overall, I didn't hate it.
  17. R U Talkin' RE2 Remake RE: ME?

Thumbs up for the thread title. Only RE game I've played all the way through is RE4, only ever played the demo of RE2 back in the day. This new version does look neat tho.
  18. [Dev Log] In The Shade of the Puffin

    That's a damn fine gecko!
  19. Modest Tech: The NX Generation (Nintendo Switch)

Ah, didn't realize they were different games. The last 2D Mario I played was SMB3 circa 2002 and before that the GameBoy Marios in the early 90's. I'm also at the Soda Jungle now and I totally agree with you about the inertia. I replayed Celeste not long before starting up NSMB and the contrast is stark. I feel much more in control when playing Celeste. I'm still enjoying this though. Also this Tim Rogers video is good stuff.
  20. [Released] A Thousand Dormant Machines

Two of my favourite Wizard Jammers making a game? Consider me HYPED!
  21. [Dev Log] In The Shade of the Puffin

Good Puffin content and welcome to the forums! I'm having kind of a hard time envisioning how this'll play. Mainly about staying in the shade of Puffins running back and forth, might it not make more sense to have the Puffins' flying overhead? So you'd see their wings-spread silhouette on the ground and have to stay within it? Anyway, I look forward to seeing how it turns out.
  22. Modest Tech: The NX Generation (Nintendo Switch)

When New Super Mario Bros came out for the DS in 2006 I said "boy, that name is sure to age poorly! It won't be so "New" in 10 years, EH?". Welp, seem Nintendo has gotten around that by re-releasing it every few years, first for the Wii, then Wii U, and today New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe is coming out on the Switch. This game will always be NEW! IT WILL NEVER AGE!!! CIVILIZATIONS WILL CRUMBLE INTO DUST BUT NEW SUPER MARIO BROS WILL NEVER DIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Also I haven't played any of the previous versions so I picked it up for the Switch, looking forward to getting into it over the weekend.
  23. Netflix Originals

Vulture has ranked all of Netflix's original movies. I've watched quite a few of these, even on the crap-end of the scale. I'd say around #120 they get to the stuff I'd call "watchable", like Ibiza and The Incredible Jessica James. In the top 10 I loved Shrikers, The Meyerowitz Stories and Buster Scruggs. Okja and Roma I liked well enough, but The Other Side of the Wind I turned off 30 minutes in. Gotta check out the rest of the top 10. Also I totally forgot that The Legacy of a Whitetail Deer Hunter, a dramedy starring Josh Brolin and Danny McBride, came out this year, gotta add that to my top 10 list. My top 10 Netflix movies of 2018 (final list): 1. Annihilation (not on Vulture's list since I guess it was only primarly distributed by Netflix in Europe? I'm still counting it tho!) 2. The Ballad Of Buster Scruggs 3. Shirkers 4. Us And Them 5. Roma 6. A Futile And Stupid Gesture 7. Apostle 8. Ibiza 9. Manhunt 10. The Legacy of a Whitetail Deer Hunter
  24. Modest Tech: The NX Generation (Nintendo Switch)

Yeah the internet is great, but sometimes it steers us wrong. I bought Dead Cells after the entire internet assured me it was great, but guess what, I did NOT care for it. :|
  25. CHRISTMAS 2018

Merry Christmas! I watched the video but wish I hadn't.
