  1. Finished it. Reeeaaally happy with it. Great experience.
  2. Firaxis' XCOM Enemy Unknown

It's because of three moves ahead, but I'd much rather welcome their readers here.
  3. The beginning damn near had me tear up. I hope I'll geg time to play this properly soon.
  4. My internet provider decided to do some work yesterday and knocked out my internet so I can't play.
  5. The Witness by Jonathan Blow

Yup, I went back to the simpler ones and I think I have it now. I'm at five lasers.
  6. The Witness by Jonathan Blow

Oh, god, trying to quote shows me spoilers. Just managed to avoid them. Anyway, I wouldn't say I brute forced them. It was still quick to find when they work and the puzzle was usually in figuring out the rest. Only two of them got me stuck for a while. But I'm still not sure about the mechanism. Going back in tonight.
  7. Movie/TV recommendations

Yup, I bought it when I got the email!

I've done the quarry and I swear I have no idea what makes the pointy triangle things click and work. Sometimes they work in just two squares, usually they need space. No need to spoil it for me, I just feel dumb at the moment.
  9. XCOM 2

It's super weird to me that some games let me name people who already have names. All that stuff as well as any changes I can make to how someone looks apart from equipment make the world seem less cohesive to me.
  10. Movie/TV recommendations

Five bucks an episode is pretty rough.
  11. Feminism

    Huh. What's your timezone?
  12. Torment: Tides of Numenera

Would be a awesome to hear that this is good. Wasteland was a huge disappointment though.
  13. The Witness by Jonathan Blow

Had to pull the trigger on this earlier today. Very pleased with the beginning. I'm a bit worried that the difficulty will get too much for me towards the end, but so far investigating the place has been great.

If you compare it to Myst, those games had CGI and FMV scenes as reward. People usually need some reward for hard work.
  15. I'm looking for a game to play with my girlfriend's brother. The thing is, he operates his laptop using sight based controls. That's a huge limit to what kind of games he can play. We used to play chess online -- lichess.org has a play by email type of setup, which worked fine. However, I'd much prefer a game I can play without the taste of blood in my mouth. Chess is just too severe. I can't think of interesting games for us to play, so I'm hoping some of you know games that fit these very strict criteria: * Asynchronous play * Very simple mouse based UI -- even dragging can be very difficult * Turn based with no time limit * Very low demands on hardware I'm hoping to find something that's a bit lighter than chess -- at least some randomness etc. Many thanks to anyone who can help me with this.
  16. The Witcher 3: What Geralt Wants

I guess I got used to it.
  17. Yeah, and honestly I'm not even sure how well the system copes with fullscreen games. I was looking up asynchronous games and Solium Infernum came up. I remember reading a ton of stuff on RPS about that game, so that could be a good one. I remember Cryptic Comet's games aren't fullscreen, so there's no danger of any technical hiccups. The Frozen games would definitely be too fiddly and Civ V tends to break multiplayer games after you've put hours into them. Thanks for all the suggestions. I know I'm kind of shooting them all down, but if you knew how difficult these things can be... I'd rather try something I know will at least technically work. FreeCiv has a HTML5 version with a Play By Email mode. That would work. I guess it can be a bit unfriendly if you've never played Civ before.
  18. The Witcher 3: What Geralt Wants

My brother bought this for me for Christmas. I'm feeling pretty dumb, but for the first time in years I'm having huge trouble controlling a pretty standard 3rd person 3D game. I've tried to play it a couple of times today and it actually makes me feel angry because I can't navigate the world with any grace. Did anyone else have these issues? Maybe my brain is deteriorating or something, because I played a chunk of Witcher 2 without too many problems. So far I've mostly tried it with a gamepad, I'll try the keyboard controls.
  19. Thanks, guys. The game will definitely have to be asynchronous. There's very little chance we'd be able to coordinate times when we are both playing. He can input text, but it's slow and I doubt it would be very exciting for him. Anything 3D will probably be too heavy. I think the sight controls interfere with the laptop somehow, but I've never used it. Neptune's Pride comes to mind, actually.
  20. Star Wars VII - Open spoilers

Yeah but there's still less of that since there were tons of those books and only one new movie My biggest beef with that stuff was how every character in the movie had a huge backstory full of incredible stuff written for them. Of course the prequels and even the originals are guilty of manufacturing connections between the characters. Stuff like C3PO being built by Darth Vader for no reason at all.
  21. Movie/TV recommendations

That sounds like the best solution all around.
  22. Movie/TV recommendations

There's a whole thread for it!
  23. Star Wars VII - Open spoilers

I'm never going to watch that.
  24. Didactic Thumbs (Pedantry Corner)

I knew all that going in and it didn't bother me.
