derbius Posted May 26, 2021 The announcement of Victoria 3 and the way this grand strategic "sandbox" game seems to focus on the colonial period from the colonizer's POV caused me to go off on a bit of a rant. I hope I am wrong about the way it's going to go but regardless I would like to hear from the 3MA team and if they can have the PDX folks talk about how history can/should be taught/used in strategy titles: https://blog.org/2021/05/values-in-video-games-victoria-3/
zaldar Posted February 7 Curious are you familiar with Austin Walker? He always had issues with the human history as a straight arrow to larger and greater things that games like Civilization seemed to propagate. I like to think of human society that way but of course reality is there are dips and valleys.
derbius Posted February 8 No I have never run across him. To my surprise it turns out there are quite a few people studying the relationship between history and gaming - Bret Devereaux has started to turn up increasingly at 3MA to fill that role but I would like to hear some other voices too... clyde Posted February 10 This is a bit of a stretch from what y'all are talking about, but your conversation reminded me of this video: Though it does reference the militaristic origins of strategy game design, it is mostly about the cross-over of strategy game enthusiasts and simulation design used for military and government decisions. I found it entertaining and interesting.
