Take me on the last express

Recommended Posts

I recently picked out The Last Express from my library and began playing it for the fifth time I think. And it hit me: I think this is the greates game evAr...

mmm the voice-acting, the mood, the world on the brink of war, the intriguing chracters, the absolute realistic use of different languages - so seldom done in even movies.... ahh i love this game.

For me it is one of those games that can make you cry when you realize you have finished it and there is nothing left but your utterly boring every day reality.

How I wish Mechner made a sequel. Maybe the last fishing boat: Robert Cath fleeing from his prosecuters in a fisherboat on the black sea... intriguing local fishermen - the whole political crazyness in the middleeast in the third game - the last camel-caravan... and so on,..... No really I think there is great potential to take this formula and make more games with it.... it was so.... neat.....

I ordered a copy from cdaccess recently and it just arrived a couple days ago. I've done very little so far (aside from accidentally call the train attendant after closing myself in the room with the dead body ... good work me) but I am super impressed with it.

Also the CDAccess copy comes in a full size box with really nice multi-cd full color cardboard fold out sleeve. It's not a super budget jewel or shrinkwrap-manual-OEM release. Worth buying.

ahh it must be great diving into this game for the first time...

And the box is really nice - for some reason mine included a strategy guide also with interviews and historical background for where the game begins (as well as the 'strategy' of course....

after reading that jordan mechner interview on gamasutra, i totally had to get the game. i have a torrent going SLOWLY right now, but i was JUST gonna order it from cd-access until i read this about shipping to canada :

Retail Boxes will have the outer packaging discarded. You will receive all materials inside the box but not the box itself.

so, its either ebay or torrent for me

that's strange.... why don't they do that - I mean if you pay there shouldn't be any problems?

Oh man, I love The Last Express. I have it in that multi-cd fold-out thing, which is worth getting. Well, as much as a multi-cd fold-out thing can be, anyway. It really is worth buying.

I've had thoughts about replaying this for a couple of years already, but haven't managed to start for some reason. So many new games I haven't played/finished ...

Same thing with Grim Fandango.

I have the original box too, with a strategy guide and interview.

Hmm, I seem to remember that at least in the past cdaccess only selled jewel cased games to outside of USA.

So they kind of threw away the boxes if someone ordered the game for example from Europe.

Apparently they do let you, if you get it FedEx-ed.

Orders valued at $50 or more or which include large Retail Boxes (and you actually want the packaging - see above) must be shipped by Federal Express International Courier for delivery within 2 days.

I have no idea why they have to do that, though.

i'd rather not pay $25 bucks extra to get it shipped to canada with the box ... thats ridiculously expensive.

Oh, I wouldn't either. Is the box really that important, though? I think you'll find it's a pretty good game even without it.

Wow, Chris, that sounds great. You've totally won me over. I think I'm gonna go out and buy this game right now. You make it sound totally awesome.

Seriously though... I don't know much about this game, but I take it that the movie of the same name is based on the game? If so (I realize this is slightly off topic), it would be kind of neat to finally have a film adaption of a game that's actually pretty good. Or at least, it is from what I've heard.

I'm definitely interested in the game now. Anybody recommend any good reviews, etc for it?

Collectors etc like boxes.

Sure, but if SiN was getting it via torrent, he probably isn't a collector...?

Isn't this like that game, Cruise for a Corpse, or whatever it was, where everything is timed and you have to do stuff at the right moment and in the right order to complete it?

i am, kinda. see, i absolutely love collecting up all the boxes and neatly stacking them up on my shelf (which is near full now). if i can find a game in the original box at a reasonable price, im definitly buying it!

if i cant, i dont mind a torrent. the thing is, if im gonna pay good money for it, i wanna get the whole thing, box et-all. if not, than its not quite worth it for me.

It says it works on Mac. Anyone know if the game works with OSX or just classic?

Same thing with Grim Fandango.

Yeah I know what you mean - this game requires a certain initiative to get into... I mean it's not very pick up and play like - but when you do take the time and actually go through it to the end - it is so great... really really great... it takes some and it gives a lot.....

Well I'm not sure about the movie - there is one from 1937 which is definately not based on the game (and not the other way around either). I know Jordan Mechner made a screenplay out of the game - and tried to make producers see how great it was for a couple of years - but I don't think he succeded..

anyway here is a cook-up of reviews from everywhere.... http://members.lycos.co.uk/ianandmark/lastexpress/

Nope - it is real-time, but in fact you could just go to your own train-department and sit there for like days-and-night.... You want complete the game - as there is some crucial points where you have to do definitew things... but they are rather few - the thing is there is so many conversations to eavesdrop so much to know - that you will miss something whatever you do.... you can listen to someone in the salon, but at the same time you could use the time to explore their department when they're gone etc.... it's not that puzzle-filled in the traditional sense - it's more about figuring out what is going on with all these people and yourself... etc etc.... and just to experience the mood.... = great

It says it works on Mac. Anyone know if the game works with OSX or just classic?

I have no idea..... is there often compatibilty-problems with os classic and osx?
