BigJKO Posted January 2 Tragic, that after all the mentions on the podcast we never got to do a UFO 50 thread on the forums. So let's rectify this immediately. What's your favorite of the 50? I still haven't played them all, but I was very fond of Lords of Diskonia. Something about the disc, air hockey physics just worked for me. I need to try that one again, see if I can actually win something there. The other one that immediately grabbed me was Paint Chase. Splatoon racing is just such a great idea, so much so I almost wanted to start implementing a paint mode into Tiny Tires.
Lechimp Posted January 2 I'm still pretty early on because I stay on each game too long so I'm not ready to call any favorites but I agree, it's great! It was a really good year for games anthologies. This page listed a few that came out last year https://www.pressplaygaming.net/articles/2024/12/10/ppg-game-of-the-year-2024-57-antholo-geeze-this-is-a-great-collection-of-anthologies
Henke Posted January 22 My GOTY of last year. I've played 81 hours of this collection. 13 gold cartridges and one cherry. My top 5: Avianos - I bounced off this dino-themed turn based strategy first time I tried it. Too complex. But later on I came back and it ended up being my most played (over 10h) and my first cherry. The lack of tutorial means you just kinda have to play it and fail miserably first just to learn the systems, but after that it's a really compelling strategy game. Kinda a very minimalist Civilization. Lords of Diskonia - yeah, JKO, this one's great! My second most played game, also strategy. I like strategy games that do away with random dice rolls and just run on things you can directly control, and both this and Avianos is a good example of that. Party House - I don't like deck builders. Party House is a deck builder which does a great job at disguising itself as NOT a deck builder. This game tricked me! Cajoled me into having a good time! I got so damn hooked on this thing! Mortol - a very innovative platformer where you need to keep sacrificing your units in order to progress. The sequel is expands the scope into a one-level open world thingy which is also fun, but overall I prefer the lean focus of Mortol 1. Mooncat - platformer which gets an insane amount of control and varity of moves out of its 2-button control scheme. I loved it. Also very good: Warptank, Vainger, Pingolf, Barbuta, Kick Club, Waldorf's Journey
Henke Posted January 22 Oh btw, in lieu of Idle Thumbs episodes about it, check out the Eggplant Podcast, which is on a year-long journey of playing through the collection one game per week. They're currently up to the 17th game, Campanella.
