netmonkey Posted March 2, 2005 I don't know if you guys read something about fanbois whining about some gaming interviews for like a girls magazine as well as some thing about how gaming magazine are worthless (I think I got those links from Grumpy Gamer), but I'm wondering if there is anything out there worth buying that you can't get online. I was at the local Hastings (an entertainment superstore) and I was looking at the Game Developer magazine and it had a really interesting article on the gaming market for girls. The most interesting part I read for all the tactics companies should use to expand the market was that they were talking about tennis shoes. Before the 90s hit, sports shoes where mostly targeted at men, but then someone realize that, omg, women also like tennis shoes! so they started marketing the shoes for both men and women and behold... many, if not more, women buy tennis shoes for men (I would say more, because generally women buy more shoes than guys... my sister has like 6 pairs of tennis... and I live life with like 3 pairs of shoes). Anyway, I searched on Gamasutra to see if they had the article online but they didn't, so I guess it's pretty good reason to buy the magazine, specially if you're a decent game maker-wannabe like myself. A $5 for a very thin magazine is not very appealing, though, and the last 10 pages are full of ads. I'll shut up and ask the question out there: What (gaming-related) magazines out there do you find worth buying?
pj- Posted March 2, 2005 I subscribe to the official playstation magazine and the official xbox magazine for the previews and the demo disks. Everything else I can get on the internet for free, and of better quality..
Tanukitsune Posted March 2, 2005 We had a gaming mag called Game Live in Spain, but it closed and reopened recently under the name of PC Life, it's on of the few gaming magazine I actually trust... Since most PC mags come with free games in a DVD case and everything, those 4-5€ seem well spent... I remember one came with the Leisure Suit Larry Collection! Roderick Posted March 2, 2005 The one time I borrowed Game Developer Magazine from the library on school I thought it was pretty crappy. COuld've just been an uninteresting number though.
lailoken Posted March 2, 2005 I still enjoy EDGE magazine. I hear everybody complaining how it used to be so much better, but I only discovered it recently and to me it's everything a gaming mag should be. It actually takes gamers seriously without being a total geekfest... dunno... they could have more inside stories though...
Marek Posted March 2, 2005 I think EDGE was hated during 2002-2004 because it didn't seem to enjoy games much during that period, and hence became a bit whiny and elitist-sounding. Of course, it's hard to blame them, cause those were particularly bad years for gaming. Now they're awesome again, but the hatred has lingered. EDGE is probably the best mag around. You'll either hate or love the new layout (I love it), but the content is undeniably solid. I enjoy the magazine most for its special features, such as their interviews and Time Extend (an elaborate look back at a game that's a couple years old). The BiffoVision column, in its new format, is the most hilarious thing ever. Like once they had a really funny excerpt from a supposed Half-Life 2: The Movie screenplay, and in the current issue there's a colorful "Is your boyfriend a Video game addict?" test from a fictional magazine called Girl Talk. Great stuff. I've heard the youngsters these days prefer Games[tm] though. I still haven't bothered reading that mag, as anyone who reads it is clearly wrong and communist. OftenK Posted March 2, 2005 I like OXM a lot. Xbox Nation had a nice bold design, but their content was crap--and a lot of times it was crap they had already used in previous issues. That's probably why it doesn't exist anymore.
General Fuzzy McBitty Posted March 2, 2005 I miss Game Players.
Alex Posted March 2, 2005 I enjoy PC Zone, but not as much as I used to. They take their jobs seriously but are still fairly witty and humourous about it all. However, their age is beginning to take it's grip, and a lot of it is turning into old men grumbling, which is amusing from one point of view, but irritating from another. as anyone who reads it is clearly wrong and communist. Those two are mutually exclusive... god dammit, where's a hammer and sickle icon when you need it?
Thrik Posted March 2, 2005 I like Edge too. Are there any other comparably good gaming magazines in the UK other than said magazine? One doesn't really keep me entertained for an entire month whilst on the toilet train.
lailoken Posted March 2, 2005 I tried Games™, cuz I was like "wait this is way bigger than edge and the design looks great too... so maybe it is better..." boy was I wrong, it's just totally convoluted crap... That proves the Americans are wrong! Bigger is not Better!
Roderick Posted March 2, 2005 Don't know about the English-language one, but the Dutch PC Zone Benelux is a horrible, gruesome magazine filled with jokes about poop, remarks towards poop and witticism involving poop. It's like taking a big long plunge into an awkwardly filled toiletbowl, reading that piece of literal shit. GamesTM is supposed to be good. As soon as I feel that Communist urge again, and get the 10 euros it'll cost me subsidized by the government, I'll buy it.
netmonkey Posted March 2, 2005 European magazines seem to be much better than American magazines. I was looking at a copy of the UK PC Gamer once and it just had a lot more variety of content and information than what PC Gamer ever did, or maybe it was because I wasn't used to the mag's content layout. But over here any Euro mag costs like $10... are they insane?!
Thrik Posted March 2, 2005 PCGUK is fairly amusing, but the articles really aren't that generally interesting to read. Whilst Edge can even make an article subject that I have roughly no interest in an amusing read, PCGUK just.. can't.
Roderick Posted March 2, 2005 Now imagine that a mag from England (which is the neighbours + a egligable body of water) costs 10 euros here, in the Netherlands. That's an insane amount. Luckily I have the school library

The english one has become better recently by having interesting features on aspects of the industry which are seldom touched upon. Japanese porn games for example... all in the best taste, of course.
lailoken Posted March 3, 2005 Yeah... a long time ago when they started out (talking 1992 for christ's sake) German Console Magazine MAN!AC used to have stuff about those too and animés as well. But as time wore on they got more and more mainstream and leaft all of that original "differentiation" stuff behind... I finally stopped reading that magazine in 2002... ten long years...but in the end they just sucked ass!
Spaff Posted March 3, 2005 Games™ is the best actual consumer gaming magazine in the UK I'd say. Its way less full of shit than edge plus they fill half their magazine with retro stuff and seem to be comprised of gamers rather than fucking idiots. Also Rob consolvania occasionally writes for them. Edge can basically be read in one trip to the toilet - read the columns and ignore the rest then wipe your arse with the 'up my own arse' reviews. Develop sometimes has some good articles that are often more in depth: analytical type shite aimed at in-industry types i guess, some of it is crap tho ¬ MVC the trade magazine is occasicanally quite interesting but is mostly indy retailers bitching about TESCO or WALMART or companies selling their services. other than that nothing really cuts the meatloaf.... pczone has some good writers
Marek Posted March 3, 2005 Edge can basically be read in one trip to the toilet - read the columns and ignore the rest then wipe your arse with the 'up my own arse' reviews. What? You think the best thing about Edge are its columns? Your opinion sucks. Clearly Edge's columns are all horrible and should be skipped, except for the excellent BiffoVision. Their reviews are great and anyone who disagrees with that probably does so because at one time Edge has given that person's favorite game a 3/10, as they sometimes do. But that doesn't make them bad reviewers. ¬ OK I'm done.
