Marek Posted June 27, 2005 What what? He's getting his own show? This is terrible! The others are totally replaceable to my mind, except probably Samantha Bee. But Steven Colbert is pretty key to the Daily Show. He's the guy that's actually funny, and occasionally causes Jon Stewart to be actually funny as well. Bad bad idea... Duncan Posted June 27, 2005 I don't actually know the latest on this but last I heard the new show wasn't actually a done deal. They have the idea and Colbert's committed to it but they don't have anyone to actually produce it yet. So it might not happen. Even if it does happen though, the official line isn't that he's leaving the show but rather his appearances will be dramatically reduced or something like that. Which I think would be similar to Steve Carrell's status on the show now. (basically long stretches of nothing punctuated by short cameos.) Anyway, yeah it would suck, 'cause I agree with you, he's definitely the least replaceable correspondent. Except I think I could deal with no Samantha Bee but not with no Rob Corddry. Marek Posted June 27, 2005 Ah OK. That would still be bad news though, as Steve Carell is basically worthless for the show these days. Produce Pete was never funny. Carell was good during the Iraq war when he was the default correspondent to be embedded with some random infantry brigade and had to talk over a videophone with 10 seconds delay. I don't like Ron and Ed that much. I do kind of like Samatha's "I'm a crazy person!!!11 " type of humor. Colbert is totally awesome though. I really like his diction and composure. It's like he's constantly selling you on some kind of ridiculous idea.
Dingo Chavez Posted June 27, 2005 Colbert is one funniest people on television, he's as essential to the show as Jon Stewart (I think so). I'll hate to see his role diminish, he's just too damn good. Stay regulary, Stephen. Ed Helms will be good... I promise, please stay. He does read the Idle Forum, right?
MrHoatzin Posted June 27, 2005 You mean, Ted Hitler gets his own show?

Jake Posted June 27, 2005 I miss when the Daily Show was more about deflating the news of the day and less about Jon Stewart doing nothing but mugging at the audience and laughing at his own jokes. (I still like the daily show, I just think it's become a bit more inbred/twisted in on itself than it used to be... that show used to be pretty spot-on and slickly written without tons of winking self referential humor on top of what was by definition a winking self-referential show)

JoeX111 Posted June 28, 2005 From what I was reading, Colbert's show will probably directly follow the Daily Show, which would start introducing a segment where John and Colbert have a split screen anchor discussion with one another about the top news. This would end the Daily Show and lead into Colbert's show. No word on whether that is final or not, though.

MrChlorophyll Posted June 28, 2005 I'll take that. Heck, I'll take two!
n0wak Posted June 29, 2005 Colbert is the best, yes. He was also on the great but way, way, way too short lived "Dana Carvey Show" and I so wish that would get a DVD release. Apparently, Steve Carell was also on that show, which makes for a double shot of ex-Daily Show awesomeness (and yeah, Produce Pete is blah, but when he was a regular on the show he too was great.) So without them, it does kind of leave a void. I like Ed Helms, and the segments that Bob Witfong does, but neither of those would work as the second-hand-man on the show. Oh well. If the Colbert Report will be good, it's not like we're going to miss him. Also, Samantha Bee is a Torontonian
tabacco Posted June 29, 2005 Don't forget that Stephen Colbert also played Chuck Noblet on Strangers With Candy. By the way, Stephen Colbert and Steve Carell were the voices for the Ambiguously Gay Duo. Colbert was Ace and Carell was Gary.
