what the hell is the use of buying gold ... doesnt it take all the fun/challenge out of actually earning it??? i cant believe how SO many people take MMORPGs to be a type of "I'm better than you ... look at my level!" game as opposed to the social game it should be!

ARGH!

(sorry, had to get that in before the eventual lock)

Ha ha, why bother locking it? I believe this poster offers a valuable service, and deserves his fair use of these Idle Thumbs forums to hock his interwares.

Seriously though, this is ridiculous. Let's use this thread to discuss what the hell is up with gold harvesting, and paying real money for fake money.

I sincerely question the priorities of someone who would go through with the real money -> fake gold transaction. Can scoring easy game currency really be worth part of your paycheck? I mean, part that you aren't already spending on the monthly fee for the simple privilege of playing the game?

But I generally don't "get" MMOs in the first place. It's like, I don't want to spend my time and mind dealing with this grind. What, I don't have a real life to worry about so I need the burden of managing the minutae of all the equipment and skills and whatnot of this character in some fantasy life? Just to fight bigger monsters? What a fucking drag.

That might sound weird, considering that I do love games, all of which are based on playing out false interactions in false worlds. But in games, I'm mostly in it for the story, and for the satisfaction of beginning a game then completing it. That arc, that closure, is the draw for me, I think. MMO's don't offer me that.

And when I have played MMO's, I can't imagine spending money to NOT play part of it.

Isn't there something against this shit in the game's EULA? IF not, there fuckin' should be. Gahhhhhh...

One of the better things about Guild Wars is how little your funds actually matter after the first couple week's play. Coupled with the low, easily-reachable level cap and custom, unsellable expensive items like armour, the community manages to largely avoid endlessly infuriating services like this.

And thanks to the "instanced" nature of the game, you do manage to take part in a central story arc, fighting with your chosen mates against the major enemies, along with the main character NPCs and the like, something which games like WoW can't do by nature of their design. But then if you want to be pedantic, GW isnt really a MMORPG anyway, but it does offer a cohesive story above most of the crowd.

Urk, Im beginning to sound like almost as bad a sales rep as that guy...

I, on the other, don't understand the fun/challenge in it at all.

Right, this thread is officially a "Why MMORPG games should all be burnt" discussion centre.

Well, if that's the debate, then I nominate EverQuest for "first to the wall" status. I've never played a more unintuitive, mindlessly addictive (not to be confused with actually being enjoyable) waste of time, ever. I'm just glad I got a chance to try it free on a coverdisc instead of adding insult to injury and actually paying box price plus a monthly fee. Take everything that's bad about online games, wrap it up in beards and improbably-armoured breasts, and you have EQ.

I've played 2 MMO games so far ... Everquest and WoW ... I'm soon gonna play City of Heroes too. I haven't payed a dime to play any of em ... either coverdisks (EQ, CoH) or trial editions (WoW).

I think both games (EQ & WoW) were reasonably fun. The thing with EQ was that the first day I played it, I thought it was crap ... dated, unintuitive, buggy. Once I started playing it with a friend though, things changed. He gave me high-level weapons, so the leveling up bit was simple enough. But it was fun because we were playing together ... and when we weren't playing together, there were people to talk to. Most EQ players were older and mature ... was a pleasure playing with them. Lots of chatter going on. Lots of helping other people.

WoW was quite the opposite. It could have honestly been a single player game where all the other characters were bots, and I wouldn't have been able to tell! In all the 10 days that I played, only ONCE, did I group up with someone and just have some fun. Normally, people wouldnt reply to me when I asked them something! But WoW was a great game for another reason ... by simply ignoring everyone else, and not really caring about leveling up, you got to experience this great alternate-world ... this huge, seamless world, full of atmosphere. THAT was the amazing bit about WoW. If only it wasnt full of stupid kids who just wanted to cheat and level-up ...

... which really, Really bothers me. Whats the urge to be a level 60 character? My friend who I got the trial from (he bought the full game) was telling me about how he chose the best character to level up with, has gone to websites to carefully see how to level himself up most efficiently ... hell, he even has a table detailing "monsters experience" vs "my experience" vs "time spent" vs "how much gain"! In other words, a "what should I kill to get the most experience the fastest" table!!!!!

I mean, holy shit! At this point, haven't we forgotten about the point of games?

I almost feel sorry for these people who are determined to be the best at [insert MMORPG here]. I get the feeling these people are the types of losers who have nothing in life but a fucking video-game. They MUST be good at this video-game, because thats all they have in life. In the real world, they aren't payed any respect, but if they get to level 60, they can wank around and gloat like fuckers all they want.

Sorry, that was brutal, but that's what I believe. Please, SOMEONE, tell me differently ... I want to believe that video games haven't come down to this!

*sigh*

Differently!

Well, I think I ought to stand up for WoW seeing as I'm actually paying for it.

One of the best things you can do is get into a nice guild (I'm in Battle Inflictors (silly name) on Terenas) which really gives the game that sense of camaraderie and community you missed. Yesterday I hit level 40, which is when you get to buy a mount (90g!!) and as I only had 20g saved up, my guildmates all chipped in to hit the target. Guilds are the way to go, totally. Another thing is that the first real good group adventures start happening around level 18 or so (seriously, those Deadmines are a hoot). After that you're probably going to be grouping on something at least once for every 3 hours of play doing anything from raiding a castle of iron dwarves to stealing a box of snuff back off of a sea giant for Captain Hecklebury Smotts.

As for maturity, this is really a server-specific thing. I've found that in general, Alliance players are younger than Horde and on average players on PvP are less mature than on PvE (PvP has a lot of the archetypical 1337 d00ds who do the ninja looting and griefing). On Terenas I have my main guy who is Alliance and another guy who's Horde and while I'm in a wonderful guild with the Alliance guy, I find the random Horde people you meet by accident to be much nicer in general and more inclined to help you out.

You can really notice this in the new Battlegrounds, as Alliance will lose 3/4 games because the Horde team is more mature and better at teamwork.

That's not to say that Alliance doesn't have mature people, it's just that it has the immature ones too.

Well, I do believe that WoW has done one unique thing that makes Powerlevelling more likely. It's just too damn easy! One of the biggest "innovations" that WoW introduced to MMOGs is the instant gratification. Essentially it is possible to hit the level cap in less than a month. Hell when I first started playing in Beta I managed to get to level 20 within two days! I know that it is a matter of maturity and now playing with a good friend I usually don't even think about XP anymore, but that's still a load of crap. By making it possible to gain two levels a day (through powelevelling) Blizzard took the fun out of being anything but level 60! Why should I buy expensive items before I hit the levelcap? All in all I think the game is just too easy. Group play as well is just shit, because there is no real challenge apart from not grouping with stupid morons. The saving grace is the great world and the occasional chance to do real roleplaying with fun people. That and goofing off... heh...

It took me two months to hit 40 :/

The only way you're going to hit 60 in half that time is if you spend all your waking hours at it, and frankly that's not Blizzard's fault.

All I can say is, I quit WoW yesterday... :shifty:

Paying 16€ a month for a game that I barely play at all and never end? No way!

I'm just not used to play neverending game anymore, I need an ending or something to tell that I've played enough and can go on to play another game...

At least with Pac-Man I could stop playing when I got a high-score... :yep:

yeah I stopped at some point as well and now after two months "cold turkey" I am again able to appreciate the game. And YES it is definitely easier to level up in WoW than in any other MMORPG and that has been one of the BIG improvements Blizzard has been talking about with WoW...

I haven't played it for two months now as well on account of my excellent internship at Bad Brain and I have to say I don't miss it one bit. I'll likely pick it up because I still have an unused gamecard, but I won't have any problems dropping it. I'm like Tanu, I need to have an ending. Until then, I want to explore the world a bit until I'm done with it.

And wait for the real badass interactive RPG experience that is called Oblivion.

Taking in the concept of roleplaying and the fact that some people take the online money stuff too seriously...

My mate went on WoW as a female character, cybered with some guy for some gold and was a higher level character's girlfriend for a couple of weeks to blag free stuff.

He eventually got bored and now plays console games. Go figure.
