Gameboy games

What are some great old school Gameboy games that are worth playing, excluding any of the Zeldas, Marios, or Pokemons?

I'd say Final Fantasy Adventure and Mystic Quest, if you're into jRPGs.

And of course, the Daikatana Zelda rip-off, just too camp to be missed.

I really liked the Final Fantasy Legend games and Metroid 2: Return of Samus. I can't remember any of the others I had back in the day, but I think I might be missing one more that I liked.

I played Motocross Maniacs more than any of my other games. Good times.

Metroid was good, but every time I played it I got stuck in the same spot and had no idea where I was going, so I never finished it. I'm really loving Fusion's map/nav rooms.

Can we list Gameboy Color games as well? Some are going to be listed in the following.

Metroid 2

Wario Land 2, 3

Dragon Warrior/Quest, 1 and 2 came on one cartridge, and 3 came out on another.

Dr. Mario

Donkey Kong

Megaman 1-5

Kirby's Dream Land 1,2

Kid Icarus, not as good as the original, but I still remember it being ok

The Final Fantasy games

Mole Mania, decent puzzle game by Nintendo

Mario Tennis and Mario Golf, which somehow managed to combine the sports and rpg genres together.

Metal Gear Solid, which is pretty good if you liked Metal Gear for the NES

A lot of these games may not be as great as I remember them to be, as it has been years since I played any of them, but I think some more gameboy games other than Metroid 2 and Final Fantasy needed to be mentioned.

Dammit, I was going to say Mole Mania! Yeah, LeChimp is spot on with those games - Mole Mania is a real sleeper that is such an awesome puzzle game. Metroid II is really great too - I remember playing it at two in the morning and being terrified because you'd be exploring these maze-like rooms with nothing but the GB's creepy ambient sound, and then you'd stumble across a Metroid and it would turn into a more powerful Metroid and the music would be intense. I don't think I've experienced such terror in any other game.

Kirby 1 + 2 are awesome, Kirby 2 being much, much, MUCH more difficult (especially if you're after those Rainbow Drops to get the final ending). Kirby's Star Stacker is a sweet and addictive puzzle game in the falling block style. Kirby's Block Ball I quite liked too, as it was breakout with Kirby, and you could earn powers like spark, stone and so on to destroy blocks more quickly, and it came complete with boss battles.

Donkey Kong '94 is highly addictive and well designed - leagues above the horrid Mario vs. Donkey Kong that tried to emulate its gameplay but failed miserably. Play it on a Super Game Boy if you can, it replaces Pauline's Game Boy shrieks with actual digitized "HELP! HELP!".

Donkey Kong Land 1 is not recommended, as it's unforgiving (if you fall down further than the screen can scroll, it counts as losing a life) but by Donkey Kong Land III they fixed this and the gameplay is nice and tight. Good fun, especially if you like the 'Country games.

Mario's Picross is an addictive puzzle game where you have to break out squares on a grid by using deduction and the clues on the sides. When you complete the grid, it will reveal a picture.

Sneaky Snakes was pretty cool - a 2D version of Snake, Rattle 'n' Roll for the NES. So basically, you eat those round things, get to the end of the level, and weigh yourself so that you can open the exit door and escape.

Survival/Stranded Kids is very cool, and much, much better than the DS update, Lost in Blue (it's less frustrating and more fun).

The Fish Files is an awesome Game Boy Color adventure game where you search for clues, pick up inventory and search for your missing fish. Amazing what they got to do for the Game Boy Color in the end.

Shantae is also quite good - kind of a mix of Metroid and a regular platform game. Sweet graphics, too.

That's all I can think of right now.

Mario Tennis

Yeah, I was going to mention that, too.

There was a puzzle game called Dexterity that was rather fun.

I've always really, really liked this game

<-------- right here

The game is so basic, that its name is just: "Golf"

But the simplicity works with it and its a very good portable game. It saves your position after every shot, so you can play for a minute or five, turn off and resume whenever. It's a basic game, but I have a soft spot for it.

I got my GBAMP today, and I'm somewhat disappointed. Apparently I hadn't done my research quite as well as I had thought. It is actually quite terrible at running GB roms. I was really looking forward to replaying the games of my youth too. :( On the plus side, scummvm ds works great.

I still don't get why you'd want to play a Scumm game on a DS. Great as the concept may be, and despite the fact that I've pretty much got the games memorized by now, I'd still like to be able to read the text. It just wasn't designed for a screen that small.

Huh ? You should use a mounted magnifier if it's really a problem. Doesn't the DS do this function by the way ? The text doesn't appear to be smaller than "start" or "select" to me.

Hey, uh, I just realized that no one has mentioned Super Mario Land, which was from the first wave of GB games. Based on what I remember from 15 years ago, it presented some interesting levels in the mario side-scrolling format.

And wasn't there a game called Tretsi or something? :hah:

Also, if everyone would be so kind as to post their comments about SCUMM VM DS here:

http://forums.idlethumbs.net/showthread.php?t=4149

Then when I'm ready to try it myself, I'll be able to find all the info in one place. :deranged:

I'm guessing that's probably why Mario Land wasn't mentioned. Moos seems to be looking for games that aren't "so famous that everybody who has played a Game Boy knows about them", which is probably why Tetris hasn't been mentioned either.

Ah, yes. I suppose that explains why I didn't mention them until much later, when I was trying to think of stuff I played that hadn't been mentioned and forgot what the point of the thread was. (I guess that since I didn't reread it, I was just thinking "essential classic GB games.) Wow am I stupid. :frusty:

My apologies. Please pretend that I only mentioned Motocross Maniacs and Dexterity.

Also, I never played the Metroid for GB, but I sympathize with Tommy Gun's experience based on the NES version (which I'm playing now).
