Gamecube homebrew

Recommended Posts

Alright, here I go again. I've just been donated a modded Gamecube and I'm wondering if anyone knows whether there is anything cool to do with it besides play this full-sized DVD copy of Super Smash Bros. with the case off (I own the original btw, hopefully clearing any ominous legal implications).

If my googling efforts are any indication, the GC homebrew scene seems to be a bit dead...

Incorrect. :shifty:

There's never been all that much, apparently due in part to the difficulty in developing for the GC (compared to, say, the Xbox).

There's stuff like GC Linux (which IMHO is a waste of time, proof-of-concept novelty, like most games console linux distros), and then there's a SNES emulator, if you're into that sort of thing. For the most part though, there's nothing on the GC homebrew scene that you couldn't get an equivalent (and probably better) PC version.

I've found that the best thing to do with my GC is to use it to play the handful of platform-exclusive titles that are any good. And given that you can get most of them on a '4 for £20' at Gamestation these days, there's no real need to resort to the powers of your mod chip :)

Thanks a bunch Tamper. Not exactly what I wanted to hear, as I'd hoped it would be useful for something other than playing pirated games... but at least I know the score now.

Although, I'm gonna have to give the SNES emulator a whirl, as I think my original console has finally packed it in. It seems there is a Genesis emulator as well.

Man, a system like the SNES may actually deserve a funeral. What are you going to do for it?

Well... I think it may just be the A.C. adapter, in which case I'll retire it to my bar fridge to keep the components in suspended animation. It's not quite time for a 21 super scope salute yet, I hope.

On that note, I'll leave you, forever optimistic...
