loonyboi Posted October 20, 2006 I will never understand why anyone likes those C&C live action cut-scenes. They're awful. Awful, awful, awful. I don't care who they put in there, they're still going to be melodramatic and painful to sit through.
Marek Posted October 20, 2006 I haven't seen them recently but back when C&C1 and Red Alert came out I really enjoyed the live action cutscenes. They were cheesy enough to be fun but not so cheesy to be horrible. Dr. Moebius being a huge doofus, Kane shooting his general through the head and looking all evil into the camera, that GDI general getting all angry in the last level and saying "DESTROY THE BASSSTAARD", Nadia's thick Russian accent, an actor with fake moustache playing Joseph Stalin.......... Awesome. It got lame when they started involving actors like James Earl Jones and actually trying to deliver quality (but, of course, falling short of actual quality, i.e. the bad kind of cheesy). Kolzig Posted October 20, 2006 I will never understand why anyone likes those C&C live action cut-scenes.They're awful. Awful, awful, awful. I don't care who they put in there, they're still going to be melodramatic and painful to sit through. That's THE POINT. They are so awful that they become good, but I've always enjoyed them. Especially original C&C cutscenes and Red Alert 2 cutscenes. Ray Wise in Red Alert 2. "You're... throwing everything you've got at us, Alex! We're supposed to be Allies, you maniac! I'm the one that put you into office."
Wrestlevania Posted October 20, 2006 …and there was me hoping this was the equivalent of those dinosaurs in Tiberian Sun.
Thrik Posted October 21, 2006 Wtf?! Anyone who seriously says they didn't enjoy the C&C cutscenes has to be being contrary for contrary's sake, or is just mental. Cheesy as they were, they were a superb little bonus for completing a mission and actually made me want to get through the whole game just to see them all. I think C&C is one of the few places where FMV still has a place. It's traditional, and it's a more interesting way of introducing the missions than the fairly bland C&C: Generals style that simply showed parts of the map in-game with a voice-over telling you what's what. Roderick Posted October 21, 2006 I'm hijacking this thread for two exclamations, angry fist et al: why is Westwood gone, and why did they stop making adventures! (and only produced crappy sequels to Lands of Lore instead of awesome ones!)
toblix Posted October 21, 2006 As I'm sure you'll all be quite interested to know, I also loved the C&C FMVs. I don't think there's ever been a RTS game with better incentives for me to finish missions.
elmuerte Posted October 21, 2006 The FMVs in C&C were good. But I don't thinks FMVs have a place in new games.
Aussie Ben Posted October 22, 2006 I also miss the crazy jester that liked to turn people to stone and make squirrels jump into exploding trees. Poor Malcolm, he was only misunderstood.
Roderick Posted October 22, 2006 He was! Yesterday I started replaying Lands of Lore 1 and it's amazing how much quality and style they poured into the game. I shudder when I think of the qualitative discordance that was the second (and third) instalment. But damn, those Kyrandia games were so... pleasant. Just pleasant. To the eye, ear and mind. Fuck realism and fuck 3D, they can't even approach the innate charm of those 2D fantasy worlds.
vimes Posted October 25, 2006 Wasn't kyrandia 3 using 3D models rendered in 2D ?
chunks Posted October 25, 2006 I heard Billy Dee Williams is going to be in C&C3
LOPcagney Posted October 26, 2006 I have to say I'm all for FMV. It made the original games. I don't know why it was ever dropped. In my oppinion, animated cutscenes can take you out of the game, since the game might be trying to feign reality and fudge it up, as in Generals. Command and Conquer and Emperor: Battle for Dune had great videos that could either be taken as part of the story line or as hillarious bonuses. Either way, I think they moved the game along. As to whether or not they belong in current games, i'd say no, unless we're talking about an adventure game with intigrated FMV (as in Myst) or a CnC game
