Death Proof Extended DVD Review

Recommended Posts

Good read, especially since pretty much all comments I hear about Death Proof is that the film is somehow raped and incomplete because it wasn't paired with Planet Terror. I'm just glad.

By the way, I know a girl who looks shockingly similar to Rose McGowan (only the blonde Death Proof Rose though). I was pretty dazed when I realized it.

This whole ordeal puzzles and angers me. I don't want to have to watch two different versions of movies before I get the complete picture. I just want one definitive version of a movie and that's it. Screw it.

What you said is totally true though. I'm not really interested in Planet Terror, but am in Death Proof. Not exactly because of directors, but simply because of the premise.

I enjoyed both Planet Terror and Death Proof. I thought Planet Terror was the less boring one, but also the less aesthetic one (the camera work, or something, in Tarantino's films is very beautiful).

I'd want to see the two films back-to-back and I had hoped that the DVD release would have made this possible. If there is no Grindhouse-DVD, Ill probably just end up buying them separately. :(

That's the one now on DVD. The Grindhouse-version is just shorter.

Death Proof is shit. And I've seen a lot of exploitation movies and other 70s and 80s crap stuff. Death Proof fits right into the crap section. The first half had a nice gimmick, but overall it was just shit. The fake trailers looked far more interesting. I hope Planet Terror will be much better.

ps, Death Proof is a masterpiece compared to BloodRayne 2

Would you care to tell why you thought it was shit, especially when compared to other exploitation films? Do you like Tarantino's work otherwise? Not trying to discredit you or anything, I'd just be interested to know why you thought that, as I found it quite fun. Whether or not it was a good exploitation film I don't know, as I haven't seen any. And I thought it was more like a parody film anyway.

I liked most of Tarantino movies (Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs, Jackie Brown, even the Kill Bills). Tarantino is a lot about talking, exploitation movies are not much about talking, it's more about action.

Death Proof was: a lot of talking, short action sequence, more talking, a little longer action sequence.

And the talking was actually quite boring in this movie. the topics were not that interesting, not a lot left to the imagination either. All the elements of the movie were a bit on par of the exploitation movies' quality, except that enormous unbalance in talking/action. Actually, I wouldn't really consider Death Proof to be exploitation, it would consider it more a 70/80s B-movie (but that's just a minor detail).

I don't think the 70/80s b-movie genre is really fit for Tarantino, but I do think it's something Rodriguez can do.

Talking about Rodriguez, why does IMDb state Sin City 2 for 2009 and Sin City 3 for 2008!?

Have to disagree. While I know what you mean that the dialogue wasn't at immediately interesting as say, Pulp Fiction, but it wasn't shit. It also wasn't shit because it "failed" at being a 70's exploitation movie. That was just the starting point of the movie, it changes after that.

It's deceptively simple, too.

Just saw Death Proof, and I really liked it.

I didn't find the first act with all its dialogue particularly boring. It was pretty creepy, but also done with a lightheartedness that gave the first attack so much more impact (pun!).

The second act I loved completely. But then I have a soft spot for 70's road movies - and that's exactly what this was. It was a homage to all the films mentioned within the movie, as well as others like Easy Rider and Duel. If you've seen and enjoyed the movies of that ouvre I expect it will make it much eaier to "get" Death Proof.
