DanJW Posted December 5, 2007 It's too tempting to just blame the parents in cases like this. Did you see the news story about where the 8-month-old baby was left to sleep in a blanket in the next room, and the family dog ate the baby's genitals? Are they bad parents too? Holy crap! it's just like The Wasp Factory!
Ginger Posted December 6, 2007 Checking in every 20-40 minutes is useless, you might as well never check (simple probability theory) Ignoring some of the absolute crap in his arguments (such as the above) I have to agree with elmuerte. Thrik in the case of the winkie eating dog, did the child die? If it didn't it was probably because the parents were next door and could hear what was happening and then react to the situation. Discussing parenting in terms of binary good and bad is pointless, theirs' was a foolish yet understandable mistake (only marginally poor parenting). What would have made it a terrible piece of parenting is if they left their child in that situation and went 120m away in a noisy restaurant so they probably wouldn't have heard anything. The McCans left their three toddlers completely out of contact (sight and sound) of anyone responsible. If the 120 meters were 1.2 miles then the children would have only been slightly more vulnerable. It was an atrocious bit of parenting, it in no way means that they deserved what happened. But neither the fact that they were generally good parents nor that nearly every parent has done something similar have an impact on how poor a decision it was to leave such young children unsupervised. Salka Posted December 6, 2007 Fine then. Ginger, when you have children, I'm going to rape them the second you leave them out of your sight. Then we'll see how you feel about it.

Wrestlevania Posted December 7, 2007 Every parent has lapses, and all it takes is an unfortunate incident to occur during one of those lapses for disaster to strike. I'm sorry, but am I missing something here? They left three young children, unattended, in a badly secured apartment whilst they trotted off to get shit-faced. Why not just hold the door open for Death on your way out, you selfish irresponsible fucks. As a parent of 3 myself, my blood runs cold at the thought of leaving my kids like this. There simply is no excuse for this -- it's unforgivable and heart-breaking, no matter what the eventual outcome is proven to be.
