castorp Posted November 1, 2008 It plays awesomely!...That sounds indeed awesome! But I don't have enough real-people-friendes with gaming-interest. In fact, just one. Do you know whether it works well with only two guys? Will the other survivors be bot-driven, or is the zombie count reduced or something like that?
Scrobbs Posted November 1, 2008 I think the other survivors will be AI, and the AI director that runs the zombies scales the difficulty depending on how well you're playing.
DanJW Posted November 1, 2008 (edited) They get taken over by bots. On the first day some people played split-screen and seemed to do fine with 2 AI players helping them. It's possible that you can lower the player count on the server settings, but if so I'm betting it will be tough, even with fewer zombies. You normally need at least one other guy to give covering fire while you help up a prone friend - and players will go down at some point. If you're the last man standing, even with full health, then only a miracle can save you. But the way the game encourages teamwork means that you'll probably be fine having two random online players join you and your friend. Nachimir Posted November 2, 2008 Occasionally a major in-game event will kick off and a big message appears on screen saying 'Player 3 Alerted The Horde!'. Then a whole tonne of them will come at you, almost always from where you were not expecting. The impression of a crowd of homicidal maniacs charging is incredible! They move very realistically, and can climb over any obstacle to get to you. Nowhere is safe, because they will scale walls, climb fences, bash down doors, crawl under cars... they will always find a way. The animation is superb. Seconded, the sight of so many zombies charging out of a doorway or around a corner towards you is phenomenal. I did find a funny AI quirk on the high-rise construction level between the hospital and the rooftop: L-shaped piece of floor, me at one end and zombies charging from the other. They all ran straight towards me and off the edge of the building Do you know whether it works well with only two guys? Will the other survivors be bot-driven, or is the zombie count reduced or something like that? Yeah, bots and they're okay. I played through a few levels single player and found it perfectly doable. If you start getting strangled by a smoker or something then they'll generally find you and save you. Oh, also, there are huge fat zombies that blind you with vomit and explode spectacularly when shot
castorp Posted November 2, 2008 yeah, still funThat's nice to hear. Thanks. We'll give it a try.
miffy495 Posted November 4, 2008 Dammit. You guys just had to keep going on about it. Now I'm $44 poorer. Oh well. This seems like the type of game that makes voice-chat an essential thing. I have a bluetooth headset for my PS3, but nothing for my computer. Can anyone recommend a good (cheap) solution to get the headset and PC on friendly terms? I know I'll need an adapter, but any software solutions would be appreciated.
Cigol Posted November 4, 2008 Yeah I wanted something similar but in the end decided it wasn't worth the hassle. What happens when you want to use your headphones for example? Just get a Creative Fatal1ty headset for the PC. It's cheap (maybe a little flimsy) and the microphone can be taken off when you don't need it.
Scrobbs Posted November 5, 2008 (edited) By jiminy, by jingo and by crikey, here's a fairly lengthy preview from Rock, Paper, Shotgun. I think I'm going to explode with excitement! Well, apart from one thing. In Normal you tend to encounter only one of these a time, and they weren’t too harrowing. In Advanced, we’d regularly hit situations such as someone being dragged off by a Tongue Bloke, his theoretical rescuer finding himself floored by a Fast Bloke, and the other two fending off 60 zombies that had just turned up as a result of a Fat Bloke being sick on them. Facing multiple specials at once is high trauma and a monstrous challenge - and one, interestingly, that I think can only be mastered to a certain extent. Being a master of the headshot is one thing, but the tactical thinking, reflex and pure luck necessary to stay alive in the face of genuinely overwhelming odds is another. Winner! DanJW Posted November 5, 2008 Yeah just finished reading that myself. Seems pretty spot-on, although they had only minimal experience of the way the AI director can change things. Another thing that became apparent at the Expo: It's a great game for spectators. The huge queue and back-up onlookers where constantly providing 'oohs' and 'aahs' and 'holy shits'. Watching everything go tits-up for a team is fun all by itself, but there were also cheers and applause when a group managed to pull it back from the edge. Erkki Posted November 7, 2008 Just played the demo (singleplayer). This game is crazy! Especially the sound is insane when a big horde attacks.
Scrobbs Posted November 10, 2008 Right, so I've sorted one demo server out, and the other is up now but needs configuring, so will be available this evening. If there is any interest for a thumb L4D session, shout! The demo will be avail to everyone tomorrow I think, as opposed to pre-orderererererers.

Would anyone care to guess how it might run on my sagging desktop, based on the scientific absolute that Episode One runs "fairly smoothly" on decent settings and at a modest res (i.e. 1,024 by 768)? Scrobbs Posted November 10, 2008 Its the source engine - although it's not the most beautiful around, it remains one of the most scalable. The demo is out tomoz - you could always give it a go for free!

Scrobbs Posted November 10, 2008 Work out a time you want to play, I will post server and vent details for you to use (which you NEED - it's far far funnier ) and password the server, plus instructions how to connect to game servers using the normal server browser and not the gamelobby system they are so insistent on you using
Scrobbs Posted November 10, 2008 Ok, I've set one of the servers with larger zombie groups, more often, and infinite ammo. You can also play as a zombie. Carnage.
Wrestlevania Posted November 11, 2008 I tried to download the demo this morning before leaving for work, just before 7am GMT, and the demo hadn't been unlocked for the sweaty masses yet. I'll try again tonight, but I expect it'll be a fairly hefty beast. So I probably won't be playing until tomorrow night.
Scrobbs Posted November 11, 2008 Public Demo will be out at 15:00 GMT. They've fixed the demo exploits, so you can no longer play as infected. Have to wait until 18th I guess.
LOPcagney Posted November 11, 2008 want to play tonight at around 4:30 my time? (3 and a half hours?) Dunno what time it is there.
Scrobbs Posted November 11, 2008 You're 5 hours behind if you are in New York. That would make it 9.30 here - I might be about - got some friends coming over, see how that pans out. Are you in the Thumbs steam group? Scratch that, yes you are.
LOPcagney Posted November 11, 2008 Might be easier to just plan for the weekend. Can't wait though...
Wrestlevania Posted November 11, 2008 I'll try again tonight, but I expect it'll be a fairly hefty beast. So I probably won't be playing until tomorrow night. Fuck me, I was expecting "big" but 3.2GB--for a demo?!
Tanukitsune Posted November 12, 2008 I just tried the public demo and while I love the teamwork aspect and I love killing zombies I don't see the whole "OMG! OMG! BEST GAME EVA!" in it... It's exciting to save and be saved by your teammates, but I don't see why people keep saying this will be better than Dead Rising?
