Spore Screen Names

Recommended Posts

Turns out Spore is pretty good, but what would make it better is if I could see what all the other Thumbs are making. So chuck your Screen Name in this thread and I can add you all as buddies, then try and figure out wtf you were thinking when you made that.

So, me first...

Screen Name: Daffadowndilly

Mine is Cigol, naturally.

I'm in space stage at the moment. Not really a fan of the whole jumping through hoops learning experience but presumably I'll get full control soon enough...

Okay, I tried this today:

  • The whole 2D cell-thing was awesome, with the huge monsters in the background.
  • The on-land part seemed a bit simple and boring. I went around and killed guys WoW style, and got offspring. That offspring can be completely different from the parents is lame. So fucking lame.
  • What "game mode" constitutes the bulk of the game time? It seemed the first mode was like an intro, and the second one too simple too keep playing for long. After that, there's, what, the RTS part? Are there multiple levels of that, too?
  • It seemed to me the whole creature building stuff is extremely simplified, so much so that it's strictly visual, with the only actual game play changes being a direct result of the number of attachments you have on your guy, everything else (placement, shape, colour, etc.) meaning nothing. Am I wrong?
  • Is multiplayer more than just races being imported between players?

In each stage there is 3 paths you can take e.g. In the cell stage you can be a Carnivore, Herbivore or Omnivore depending on what you eat through the stage, and in the Creature phase you can make friends or kill other species or a bit of both - leaving you with Predator, Social, or Adaptable. These then determine what skills you get at each stage and also shapes your future path a bit.

The number of parts on your creature doesn't matter so much as which parts you have. These let your creature do different things and better parts have higher levels of these abilities. You find better parts by finding bones or by defeating or making friends with other species. As you do this you gain more DNA points that you can spend to 'evolve' your creature by adding or changing/upgrading parts.

After the creature phase there is a tribal phase and then a civilisation phase, then you finally get into the space phase. The space phase is absolutely fucking massive and not particularly easy. The only real issue I've found is that your planet gets attacked all the time, which is apparently going to be calmed down with a patch.

Along the way you have to not only design your species, but also their ground, water, air and space vehicles as well as buildings. You can even give them clothes and a national anthem.

The whole thing is pretty big and takes a little time to realise how much is actually in there.

I think I probably missed something.

Limb placement does make a difference on your character. If you make a short creature then it wont be able to reach fruit in high trees and also the shape changes the way they dance etc (not really gameplay but still it has an effect).

Multiplayer is just races being transfered between everyone.

I've read that the more spikes and things you have on your creature then the more wary other creatures will be. There's probably lots of little things like this which aren't documented, but it'll take time for it to come to light.

I don't know - it does seem rather shallow to me but I still enjoy it.

After starting to read the article about Spore on the Brainy Gamer blog, I had a thought. Is it reall surprising that the "game" seems shallow a first? This is Will Wright, right? the same can be said of pretty much all the Sim games, right back to Sim City. Not much gamey game there. But we all know how much depth there is and the fun to be had with the system itself.

Of course I haven't yet played the game myself, so feel free to ignore me. AHHHG I NEED SPORE!
