Wrestlevania Posted January 26, 2009 Right, you probably know the drill now. If not, a recap: Tuesdays, a few Thumbs meet on Xbox LIVE at around 9pm GMT / 2pm PST and proceed to ventilate, detonate, and generally murderate anything that moves. There's strictly no structure to the evening. You want to play a specific mode, we'll do it. Fancy trying something a bit bat-shit, you're on. Winning is nice, but the banter is by far the most fun. Previous in-game topics of conversation have ranged from what your favourite game mode is in GTA multiplayer, to what games you're looking forward to in 2009, to the design merits and variety of the Pokémon games. The only limitation is that we play Thumbs & Friends only; we don't hit the public servers, we just play with people we know (or people they know). So no anonymous douchebaggery or other related horse filth that can spoil online gaming sometimes. Look forward to seeing you online tomorrow!
n0wak Posted January 26, 2009 Tomorrow we can talk about how Grand Theft Auto IV has the best writing in the century. I was originally going to bow out for tomorrow, but it seems as though my schedule has cleared. So that's nice although the reason for it is

James Posted January 26, 2009 I should be attending. OH NO!
miffy495 Posted January 27, 2009 In. I'll be attempting to up my craziness with toblix absent. It will be a shallow attempt to fill the void, but hopefully I'll do some good.
n0wak Posted January 27, 2009 I went to the store formerly-known-as-Radioshack and bought some cables and dongles and I can now record games directly onto my computer. The picture quality is ass (using old fashioned yellow phono as the composite is in my TV) but it's better than doing it on a point-and-shoot camera as before. Don't have audio though. Going to try to do something with that, but it could become an unwieldy mess of cables. Ahem.
James Posted January 27, 2009 I'm guessing you can't have it outputting video in both HD and SD, can you? I've got video through HDMI and audio through phono, but I suppose putting video through both would be an unnecessary waste of resources. If not, I probably can't be bothered to play in SD just to do a direct link to my PC. I'm glad someone's giving it a go, though. As for audio, couldn't you get a phono-to-3.5mm converter thingy and feed that into the line in of your sound card?
miffy495 Posted January 27, 2009 You can just sort of see me off to the right there. I was wedged between 3 burning ice cream trucks and the wall, just waiting until one of them exploded and put me out of my misery. From that point on, the race was all about fucking with Wrestlevania. Brilliant shot, n0wak.
James Posted January 27, 2009 If I do nothing else with my life, at least I will have been responsible for that.
Nachimir Posted January 28, 2009 This was fucking amazing. I got lucky, as you can see, and was right on the edge and able to get out and run away before they all blew up. Ringside seat! Other favorite moment, which none of you saw, was getting my fire truck wedged sideways on the wheels of the jumbo jet when we all hit it. While you all raced away, I spent about a minute steering, reversing, etc. to see if anything would free me up, but it just carried me further and further back along the track n0wak said:
miffy495 Posted January 28, 2009 I seemed to be the only one who didn't get completely screwed by that plane. I managed to squeeze perfectly between two of the engines and get away without issue. Very pleased with that one.

Well, I'm playing on an SD TV since I don't have my HD anymore Right now I'm connected via Component to the TV and I'm using a female-female dongle to attach the unused regular old yellow cable to another AV cable and into my TV Tuner card on my PC. The audio is tricky because that's already being used in the TV, so I'd need to get the red/white cables split and redirected to the tv too. Technically, I can get my TV's headphone output and split that into the red/white too, but I'd need to split that too so that I can get it to another set of speakers so that I can hear what's going on in game. It's all really annoying and more complicated than it should be. Worse yet, I've found that the videos that I did record are semi-corrupt after about four minutes. They work in Media Player classic and the ATI player, but not in VLC and Quicktime Which is annoying because I have Quicktime Pro on my Macbook and I'm using that to convert them. Uh, so yeah, this is highly unoptimal. But I did manage to get this part out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O-2u2D7WLuQ I added my own soundtrack (based on what little was available on the Macbook). miffy495 Posted January 28, 2009 Ah, one of my favorite moments from today that didn't involve messing with JamesM. "Holy crap, n0wak's on fire." "HOLY CRAP HE RAMMED ME AND SET ME ON FIRE" time passes... "...and we're both dead."
toblix Posted January 28, 2009 It seems you had a swell time. How fun! How fucking awesome!
Wrestlevania Posted January 28, 2009 Racing the ice cream trucks through the city centre was hilarious. I was, fortunately(?), at the back of the pack when James dropped one. Cue a small explosion, then lots of erupting fire and a big tangled mess of ice cream vans as you all ploughed into the building at the end of the road. I think I managed to steer left enough to use Nachimir as a crash barrier and get a decent lead ahead. And yes, "mercilessly fucked with" would be an understatement--you little sods! The ball-kicker, though, was James racing up on the final corner, me thinking he was just pissing about, only for him to zip past on the bend and snatch first right in front of me. You monkey. Aside from that, there was some worryingly close scoring again. Which is great! A paltry $13 was the difference between 2nd, 3rd and 4th in our final match, a very tense sniper rifle sneak-a-thon around the elevated walkways of that processing plant by the coast. miffy495 Posted January 28, 2009 Of course, the margin between first and second was much larger. Ah, sweet victory...
Nachimir Posted January 28, 2009 Yeah, Miffy wasted us all, but a $1 lead is too close for comfort

You monkey. I actually feel very slightly bad about that. I'll never get anywhere in life with such a considerate attitude! In light of this, my revised opinion on the matter is: "fuck you; eat dust" Kudos for sticking with Mr Tasty throughout, though.
James Posted January 28, 2009 (edited) Double post! Now with video! Click for the YouTube version,* in which I continue my trend of ripping off n0wak, in this instance replacing my obnoxious voice with music. I do hope there's some salvageable video of it from a better angle, but it's fun to remember the short period of time in which I thought I'd missed, and the following realization. Speaking of salvaging video, I presume it should be possible to convert your stuff to something everything can read, n0wak, given that something can already. Theoretically, anyway. I don't know if it's a codec issue, or something more intrinsically tied to the software. If it's the latter, I guess it might be difficult to find an alternative that works. Shit. Did you determine what caused the problem? * Or you could just click the text link instead, if you're against fun and for kicking babies. Or are the two mutually exclusive?
