Clerks and Casuals

Recommended Posts

I don't have anything to add to this discussion, but "Clerks n' Casuals" sounds like a great name for one of those NES sim games like The Wall Street Kid ... except it's about running a gamestore.

Kroms and Miffy have kind of touched on what I ran out of time to write about. I also worked in an HMV at one point and was actually much better at recommending films than I was music or games.

\ people would ask me about whether the new GTA game was any good (I think it was San Andreas) and I'd have to grit my teeth. It wasn't that the game was shit it was that I didn't like it and had strong opinions on it.

The hardcore gamers of this world often go too far in the opposite direction in reaction to the casual gamers and as a result end up making things worse.

Actually, I am very conscious of this and try to stay informed regardless. As an example, I would not buy Prototype as I currently have no interest in supporting Activision. If someone asks me if Prototype is good, I tell them "it's been received reasonably well. I haven't played that one myself, but it seems like it would be great fun if you'd just like to dick around and cause mayhem with superpowers. Maybe not so much if you're interested in a coherent story." Also, earlier today I recommended the G-Force game to a mother looking for something for their small child. From all I'd heard, it was actually competently done. Not anything to occupy an experienced gamer for any amount of time, but surprisingly good for a child-centric game. These are two games I'd never touch myself, but I try to keep myself informed well enough to be able to recommend them to people who would like them. The reason I picked GI Joe as the game I'd never sell is that I've now read three separate reviews for it that all used the word "abomination." That doesn't seem like one to recommend.

My last conversation with a "casual" went like this:

(me) "I finally bought myself a DS"

"Oh nice, got a flash card already?"

"um no you know, I like to buy my games, so I don't need it right now" (although I might get it for ScummVM at some point but I didn't mention that because they wouldn't know what that is anyway)

"why?"

...

I paused and tried to explain how I like gaming and try to support it but as I talked I realized how I could be talking to the wall instead. Afterwards I got the feeling I was seen as the little naive child who didn't get the memo that everything is now free and only stoopids would actually PAY for something.

A lot of conversations about gaming went that way with casuals, the last of that kind was a couple months ago, and I now actively try to avoid that topic with them.

Yeah sorry, my last statement wasn't fully fledged. The impression you gave me from the post is that you are like how I was with films. I love films and even though I was extremely biased and tried to convince people who seemed to know about films to try and buy old, good, Abel Ferrarra films and the like it was still easy for me to recommend kids films and well made romantic comedies because the state I felt I was in is that I wanted people to enjoy the medium no matter what their tastes were. The problem is that I think I was too intensely into gaming at the time to be able to stop myself from ranting and instead say "San Andreas is awesome if you like the previous instalments and expands on the amount to do etc"

Chris, SSX is sweet. The point I was trying to make was how to this person SSX was awesome and they clearly didn't play a lot of games yet here I was a supposed gamer who hadn't even played the last one and as a result was probably missing out
