MINERVA: Metastasis (a Half-Life 2 mod)

Recommended Posts

I've mentioned it here and there before, but off the back of the acclaim Research & Development is getting at the moment I'd urge all you Half-Lovers to check out MINERVA: Metastasis.

It's a single-player campaign, created entirely by Adam Foster, and placed in the same world and timeline as Half-Life 2, but separate from Mr Freeman's adventures. In it, you play the somewhat unwitting minion of a cold-hearted research scientist, who drops you onto a remote Combine-controlled island that's of interest.

The game comprises you trying to find out just what the Combine are doing on this small piece of land, specifically inside the previously-abandoned underground facility built there many years ago.

It's a really tight adventure and includes some superb writing and pacing. So much so that I believe Adam's now working full-time at Valve, on Portal 2 no less.

Please download and try it. It's bloody fantastic in my opinion.

For some reason, that's a really disturbing term.

Whatever the reason, it is a good reason.

I've heard a lot about this particular mod, I'd definitely be interested in finally giving it a go.

I played this a year or so ago. Probably the best Half-Life 2 singleplayer mod (but I've only played a few)

Activate early adopter snobbery!

Yeah, I played it right after it first came out, before people started talking about it. It's just not the same now that the mainstream bourgeoisie have picked up on it.

Anyway, I always thought that you were getting your instructions from some sort of AI rather than a person. I guess the fact that you get all your objectives through text doesn't help.

I don't really remember who all that on-screen text came from, but I do remember that it was decently long, decently challenging, and decently polished. Worth playing for sure.

Research and Development was also good :mock:

Steady there, gentlemen. Let's not get too liberal without the use of the spoiler tag, eh? Be a shame give away too much, given the couple of meaty twists later on. :violin:

Aaand! ~hands on hips~ I'll have you know I was playing MINERVA before it even required any of the Episodes--so there! :P

I'll get right on it as soon as I finish Research and Development. Incidentally, during GTA I thought you just had a peculiar way of pronouncing "manoeuvre", so I ended up finding it by searching for "Metastasis".

I'm amazed you got the second part, as I kept wrongly stating that as "metastatus" for some fucking reason. My brain knew the word, my mouth wanted things differently.

Having just played through Metastasis, I can tell you there's an ending to the island part, which, eh, seems to be the conclusion of the fourth episode, which in turn is the final episode of the first chapter.

Hmm..

MINERVA

'Metastasis' (Chapter 1)

Episodes-

1. Carcinogenesis

2. Downhill Struggle

3. Depth Charge

4. Pegasus

[They're all included in the download you get from the main site.]

He's still working on the next chapter, titled 'Out of Time'.

Amazingly well done mod.
