Tanukitsune Posted July 4, 2010 At first I thought it was just like they joked about in Penny Arcade and it would be like those casual game sites where the "club membership" that gives you a free credit which you can use on a game is actually the price you'd pay for the game anyway! It looks like each month you'll get one free PSN game, two minis and one PSOne game, plus discounts on other things and other free content like avatars and themes.... for about 15$, which sounds like an OK deal? But then I realized it's not 15$ a month, but every 90 days, so you're getting 3 PSN, 6 minis and 3 PSOne games for that price! That's almost a dollar for each game! The big downside is... You don't choose which game you'll get free... I'm sure you'll eventually get a stinker or two, if they have to give a 5 game each month, but I'm assuming that you'll eventually get very good ones? Also, if you got this would ever buy a PSN, mini or PSOne game every again? I wouldn't, just in case it comes for free in the Plus service in the future. miffy495 Posted July 4, 2010 I'm pretty sure I can safely ignore Playstation Plus. I've already bought pretty much everything on the PSN store that I'm interested in. Those games don't come out all that frequently either, and I'd say that I spend less that $15 every 90 days (on average) getting PS1 and PSN games. Mostly what I use the PSN for, actually, is PSP titles. I've stopped going out to buy UMDs and just like to download them. Unless Playstation Plus started working those into the mix, I don't really see the appeal. Why pay $15 every 90 days for games that may or may not be any good when I spend less than or equal to that for games that I know I want? I guess I sort of miss the point of Playstation Plus beyond that. Also, as I understand it, as soon as you stop subscribing you lose all the games they gifted you. Could anyone explain the appeal, or is it really just for people that use their PS3s more than I do? I think my console usage goes PC, DS, PSP, 360, PS3, and then Wii (the Wii would be higher if it weren't living at my girlfriend's house and inaccessible to me). Do I just need to be a bigger Sony gamer to care?
Tanukitsune Posted July 4, 2010 I'm not a Sony fan, but I pay MORE for Live GOLD which I barely use, at least I'll get some games out of this? If it weren't for the fact that I got Yakuza 3 and Ratchet & Clank: Crack in Time recently I wouldn't even turn it on.... You do lose the games, but I guess it's not that bad if you've already beaten the game? Free PSP games sounds like too much, don't they cost 20$? That would be being too generous? I mean other sites would charge this monthly instead of tri-monthly, the content is a gamble, but the price is more than fair? Besides, how many PSP games are available for download? I'd probably use the PSN more if it weren't for the fact that they don't have a section for PSN games and they put them in the same section than the PS3 DLC.... Lu Posted July 4, 2010 I'm sure they'll add new services to Playstation Plus soon. There was a Facebook thing incoming and a Hulu thing and I guess it'd surprise none of us if you have to have a subscription for that. Basically what Microsoft does; increase the perceived value of it. I'm just glad that they're not charging for basic online play. That would've sucked ass. The Dutch PSN store is stupid by the way. The layout is completely idiotic... It's been worse in the past, where the same button lead to pretty much the same thing. I wish they would copy the US store stuff already. Tanukitsune Posted July 4, 2010 What does the Facebook thing do? I think that's for everybody, because I saw it in my options, but I didn't bother with it... And I'm pretty sure Hulu is just for the US.
Lu Posted July 4, 2010 Yea, Hulu is. Uuuhm, I'm not sure... Is it out already? I haven't checked. I guess it lets you do Facebook things and I imagine it supports some sort of Facebook integration with certain games? Just guessing; I don't know.
Thompson Posted July 4, 2010 I have a PS3. I buy games for it that I want from stores or online. I watch movies on it. Done.
Patters Posted July 4, 2010 I think Sony are stuck with keeping online gaming free, even though they want to charge. From everything I have heard (I have never used a PS3 online) the 360 experience is a lot better than that of the PS3. Sony want the PS3 to be closer to the hub that the 360 has become for a lot of people, I have a friend from NY that almost exclusively uses his 360 for Netflix, yes I know the PS3 has it too, but the 360 also has Sky, and other upcoming services. I tend to pay under £30 for Xbox Live for a year, and "PlayStation Plus costs £39.99 for a one-year membership".
Tanukitsune Posted July 4, 2010 It's no doubt the XBL experience is better, but over her it's 60$ a year for XBL Gold 50$ for Playstation Plus? I gave it a go and... Fieldrunners is the same as the iPhone version only with gamepad controls now, Age of Zombies is pretty fun, since you fight zombies IN TIME and Destruction Derby is fun since all I have to do is drive into other cars.... I haven't tried Wipeout HD but I don't think I'll be any good at it...
Patters Posted July 4, 2010 Xbox live gold can be obtained cheaper if you shop around, companies buy thousands of cards/codes and sell them digitally for a much lower cost.

Yeah, I just hope it stays free, I don't want to start paying. That was one of the perks of buying games for PS3 instead. Personally, I don't use my PS3 for a hub for much of anything besides playing games and currently watching Blu-ray, but I'll probably get a dedicated all region player for that at some point. I also don't buy digital copies of movies, that are already completely overpriced in the PSN store anyway. I guess I'm with Miffy, I don't understand the exact value of this besides the perks of discounts and free games, but even then, if you're very selective about what you buy, why is this worth it? I got the press release and couldn't really see anything major being said, just sort of future promises. Are most gamers not that selective then?
miffy495 Posted July 4, 2010 Also, to reply to Tanu's question about how many PSP games are up for download: All of them. Since the PSPGo doesn't have a UMD drive, they had to put the entire catalog of PSP games up on the PSN store, and they're usually pretty cheap unless you're buying a brand new release like MGS: Peace Walker. I'd say $10-$20 is the norm, with brand new games being $40 for the first 6 months or so before being dropped down to $20-ish.
Tanukitsune Posted July 4, 2010 I just checked and they have PSP games I've been waiting for... that aren't for sale NON-digitally? Hammerin' Harry (now Gensan) is only available at PSN? DAAAAANG! I only have a 1G memory stick, so I'm going to have to buy a new one to play PSP games, right? Or I could just download one and delete it while keeping the save file? :| With the pricing they have now, they just have to give out one good game each month for it to be worth while, but like I said before, I think Plus members will buy less PSN games just in case that's the one they get for free next month? Out of curiosity I checked out what free games you get with the PSP go and they give you so many games you practically get the PSP Go for free! It's almost tempting... I feel like I remember some people whining a lot about how some games are not available... maybe one of them was Dissidia? I don't know.
juv3nal Posted July 4, 2010 Also, to reply to Tanu's question about how many PSP games are up for download: All of them. I'm pretty sure this is not true. The only thing I play with regularity on my PSP is PES and I might have bit on a pspgo if it were available, but it doesn't look like that's the case. miffy495 Posted July 5, 2010 Fair enough. It may not be all of them, but it is the vast majority of them.
SometingStupid Posted July 5, 2010 The service seems quite appealing if you ask me. If they add some better features of give the PSPlus guys some better priviliges, I might just spend the money and go for a years subscription. Also, considering i'm on my psp typing this out right now, I didn't realise that there was a massive downloadable catalouge on it...
Tanukitsune Posted July 6, 2010 The service is 15$ a trimester and you want free PSP games which are about 20? Why not ask for full PS3 games while we are at it? BTW, you get LBP if you subscribe at the beginning!
dpp Posted July 6, 2010 That is if he's in Europe... in the US, they're "lending" Wipeout HD.
Tanukitsune Posted July 6, 2010 Huh? The PSN games are only "rentals" in the US?
SometingStupid Posted July 6, 2010 Huh? The PSN games are only "rentals" in the US? I'm sure they expire once your subscription runs out. And ain't LBP the psp version? I'd check but i'm on a psp and i'm lazy.
Tanukitsune Posted July 6, 2010 I think you lose EVERYTHING you got for free from this service if you leave it. And I looked it up on PSN, it doesn't say which version it is directly, but it says it uses the SIXAXIS controller so it's the PS3 one?
twmac Posted July 6, 2010 There is some interestingly worded parts to this PlayStation Plus stuff. They say that basic online multiplayer will not be affected. What constitutes 'basic online multiplayer'? Would it be that this shifts as time goes by, or will this offer genuine benefits (for example being able to setup dedicated servers for your favourite game)? Right now, not that I am a PSN guy, I can't see the appeal but I can't imagine that Sony would let it remain this way as they would clearly want to capture all of their audience and not just the people who want to rent games for free. Sully907 Posted July 7, 2010 I would try not to look at it as PSN+, It's not called that, It's called PLAYSTATION plus. Folks need to stop comparing it to xbox live, because that's not what it's doing. It's merely a game subscription service at it's core, the other stuff like push demos is just fluff. So basicly the free games need to justify if it's worth the money or not.
SometingStupid Posted July 7, 2010 I think what would be really nice is beta trials and early access to demos. But of course this comes down to devlopers. When you look at it, the ps3 needs a reason to be better than the XBox, right now PLAYSTATION Plus could be it. It costs almost the same as a year of live, it gives you free games, and it should hopefully give extra features.
