Tanukitsune Posted July 17, 2011 I got Jamestown on the Steam sale too, but it felt awkward to make a post since the last one was mine too. Jamestown is ridiculously amazing, it puts ALL doujin shmups to shame and even a few classics too! When I first played the game on normal and found out that I had to play the whole thing again on difficult and then AGAIN on Legendary, I was kinda pissed, but like you said, replaying the levels with increasing difficulty makes you learn how to play the game, I still hate the final level, the traps were rather annoying, but I eventually beat the boss and... obviously he had a second form which killed me instantly, but eventually I beat him and it felt SOOOOOO GOOD! My only complaint is that the store is useless pretty early in the game, some people won't be good enough (or patient enough) to see the real ending, so maybe they should have added the option to buy extra credits or lives? Or unlock more credits after a few hours of gameplay? I can't believe I made it to the final level of the game without knowing that cancelling the vaunt give you a small shield for a sec. This could possibly be the perfect shmup to introduce people to the genre... Who will be confused to see all other modern shmups have goth lolita 12 year olds. PS: Which ship is your:tup: favorite? I love the charge one!
miffy495 Posted July 17, 2011 So far I've only been using the Beam ship. I actually found that the final boss wasn't too bad after a few tries. I've played that level 6 times now. Beat it on my third, 5th, and 6th tries, and last time I only needed one continue and didn't even lose a life after using it. The pattern is actually not so bad. I replayed the first level on Divine difficulty now and got through it ok, but the second handed me my ass. What sorts of different benefits do the different ships have? By the time I'd unlocked all of them, I was good with the Beam ship and didn't want to mess myself up. Now that I've beaten the game, I'm thinking about mixing it up a bit with others. Tanukitsune Posted July 17, 2011 The second ship lets you aim the secondary weapon when you press it's button, but I never found it that useful. The charge ship shoot very strong balls of energy, the more you let it charge, the more damage it does. The final ship is for experts only, it makes the bullets explode which does seems useful, but if you keep both buttons pressed at the same time you do a ridiculous amount of damage to anything right in front of you, it's very risky but rewarding if you know how to use it? I never bothered with it.
Sno Posted September 13, 2011 Radiant Silvergun arrives on XBLA this wednesday, that seems fairly relevant to this topic. Otomedius Excellent comes out as a goddamned retail release on the 20th... So there's also that... I guess...
Tanukitsune Posted September 13, 2011 I hope Otomedius come out in Europe, even though I heard it's Otomediocre.

Sno Posted September 15, 2011 (edited) So has anybody else played Radiant Silvergun yet? I think i've said it already that i've never played the game before, so this is a new experience for me. Tried emulating it a few times in the past but could never get it running. So I've got a few hours into the XBLA version and so far i really like it, i think it has a well deserved reputation and this seems to be an excellent port. Seems to have everything you could hope for, really excellent stuff. (Treasure's XBLA port of Ikaruga has a few issues and omissions, by comparison.) Game is just wrecking my shit though, this is an extremely difficult game. I used to be able to 1CC Ikaruga, but i'm just not making any progress at all here. I always had more trouble with old-school shooters though, the bigger hit boxes and faster projectiles. There's definitely a lot of odd common elements between this and Ikaruga though, Radiant Silvergun even still has the sniper shot on the basic vulcan cannon. It's obvious why Treasure regards Ikaruga as a spiritual successor, but not a direct sequel. These two games are both strangely familiar and completely different. Getting a handle on the chain scoring gimmick seems paramount to earning enough exp to power up your weapons, otherwise you just get totally overwhelmed. (I really dig that they've added Ikaruga scoring to this, i'm not all that into how the original chain scoring works.) There's some other scoring weirdness with bosses, the destruction rates. Trying to wreck as many of the tangential boss elements as possible without hitting the time limits that will just make you lose all of the potential points/exp rewards. It's all very clever, i like it. This is definitely a Treasure game. Edited September 15, 2011 by Sno
