MrHoatzin Posted October 8, 2010 The 2000 diamonds are not server commands, but an exploit that involves server latency and chests—you may have had things drop off the face of the earth when moving them within chests quickly. If you time it right, you can duplicate items. Since this is a thing, I've tried to make things difficult for me in other ways. Hence growing grass at the bottom of the world and getting the writing on the floating island to appear correct from both west and south, etc etc. I am really enjoying building all the subtle, Disneyland-style conveyors and pointers to funnel people where I want them to go. No roller coasters in my fantasy park, and I am not quite done with any of it yet, but I think there is a kind of coherent, curated adventure/experience/stroll to be had. Soon, you will all get the full dealio.
Gwardinen Posted October 8, 2010 Every time I start Minecraft it seems to build a world of tiny islands, I'm literally always on the coast and can see at least three other islands from where I am. Beginning to annoy me. I've also been trying out SMB's Realistic Textures pack, the "Browncraft: Brown & Bloom" texture pack and the Quandary 12 seasons texture pack with an automatic rotator of the seasons. I'm honestly not sure what to stick with. The annoying sameyness of the "random" world generator is making me very tempted to buy the game for myself and try out the Idle Thumbs server though. tabacco Posted October 8, 2010 Once the DNS sorts itself out, you should be able to use minecraft.idlethumbs.com to access the server. Note, .com not .net, I haven't transitioned authoritative for .net to myself yet. I just did .com, so it may take a couple of hours to kick in.

Gwardinen Posted October 8, 2010 Finally broke down and bought it for myself. Attempting to log in to the Idle Thumbs server now, be nice to me if you see me for I am all the noob. Edit: And naturally it isn't working. The connection is timing out both when trying the DNS way and the straight IP way. Is this an issue with the server or me? Also, I didn't know you could force a domain to forward to a specific port. How you do that, Doug?
marcus Posted October 8, 2010 hey! namchimir introduced me yesterday. cool server. is it down at the moment though? got disconnected earlier today and haven't been able to connect since.
elmuerte Posted October 8, 2010 It's the server. Also, I didn't know you could force a domain to forward to a specific port. How you do that, Doug? you can't, you are just using the default minecraft server port
MrHoatzin Posted October 8, 2010 25565 is the default port? Why do we even need to include it in the ip then? And why don't we have to connect to minecraft.idlethumbs.com:25565? Does the client assume the port is 25565 when you put in a domain name rather than an ip?

MrHoatzin Posted October 8, 2010 See, I thought ys rented some sort of box on a server that specializes in hosting things like minecraft and to reduce the need for unique IPs, these dudes put different instances of the game on different ports. There was this one time some random dude logged on and was like, WHO ARE YOU, MAN? and we were all, We're us, who the fuck are you? And he was all, Oops, wrong server. And then he bailed. So I assumed his error was in the port, rather than COMPLETELY ARBITRARY TYPO on the remainder of the numbers. Although, I guess if the number was close enough, it could've been another in a block of IPs the host had... anyway... I really know NOTHING about the server, other than that it is probably located in Germany and sublet from hetzner.de, that the ping is pretty middling from where I am sitting. There was something ys said that made me think he didn't just have a general-purpose box he ran arbitrary shit on, but a pre-baked solution. Still, this option would make more sense judging by the need for occasional reboots... agh...

MrHoatzin Posted October 8, 2010 Maybe we should share the server login infos among the addicted faithful so that we can restart the box without relying on ysbreker...

tabacco Posted October 9, 2010 How intensive is the server app? If it's not too bad i can host it on the thumbs box.
ysbreker Posted October 9, 2010 Sorry about the downtime guys I've been away to a conference and couldn't restart the server until late last night. I'm renting this server from a game server rental company. The same company rock paper shotgun uses for their server. I'll give out the login info to a few people so more than 1 person can restart it. @tabacco: minecraft is rather processor heavy and the bandwith usage isn't optiomized yet I believe so I don't think it's a good idea to stick it on the thumbs box.
