toblix Posted November 3, 2010 When people ask me – and they sometimes do – what console I'd choose if I had to choose one and only one I've always responded with the Xbox 360 because that's my default gaming console. If games are cross-platform, they're always better on the 360, and the only reason to go with the PS3 would be the Bluray player. But I've forgotten the platform exclusives – the system sellers. For PS3 there's Little Big Planet (and soon the possibly even more brilliant sequel) and the Uncharted games, which are all really good, and probably some more I've overlooked (Deamons' Soul(s?)?). But what games are only available on Microsoft's console? The only one I can think of is Crackdown, and I'm not even sure that is platform exclusive. I could google it, but you know. Has Microsoft been worse at securing exclusivity deals than Sony this generation? It seems they're all about limited exclusivity (GTA IV, lots of DLC), not the real thing. Should I have been recommending the PS3 all this time?
Lu Posted November 3, 2010 Does it count as exclusive if it's released on PC as well? Other than that, Halo seems pretty exclusive! Halo, Fable and Gears of War are their big ones, aren't they? Also, The definitive Forza. Alan Wake. Uhm... That Splinter Cell thing. I only have a PS3 and the PS3 has no games lol You know, I rightly don't know... I've not seen all system exclusives been put in a side-by-side list.

Not to mention the more niche but still good stuff like Banjo Kazooie and Viva Pinata and the first-game exclusives like Mass Effect 1 and Dead Rising 1. And the last bit of compelling exclusive games on the 360 are 360/PC titles, like Metro 2033, Left 4 Dead 1/2, and Splinter Cell Conviction.
Hermie Posted November 3, 2010 What those guys said.^ Also, while it's less now than before, there's a huge difference between between XBLA and PSN, both in offering, and even in the "tone" of the games.
ThunderPeel2001 Posted November 3, 2010 Yeah. I get the impression that XBLA has been a lot more successful? (Is that true?) Also: This.

twmac Posted November 3, 2010 Looking at that list it is bizarre how many Japan-only RPGs and shooters are on there. You would have thought they would have wanted to reach a much wider audience and, you know, put them on the PS3. Off of that list there aren't many I would recommend. Except for Earth Defense Force 2017
Thrik Posted November 3, 2010 To be honest neither console has that many exclusive games I'd consider truly excellent — that's pretty much why I ended up getting both. This generation has been completely dominated by multi-platform releases, diluting the whole console-vs-console concept to the point where it hardly even matters which you get. For the 360 I'd say Alan Wake, Fable, Gears of War, and Halo are the only ones I'd call system sellers. For the PS3 it'd be LittleBigPlanet, God of War, Heavy Rain, Metal Gear Solid, and Uncharted. jneeriem Posted November 3, 2010 I'd buy a PS3 for some of their exclusive games, so I guess Sony has a win there, but I'm also totally content with the content (games and xbla) I get through my xbox so that probably negates that winning factor.

This generation has been completely dominated by multi-platform releases, diluting the whole console-vs-console concept to the point where it hardly even matters which you get. I think that is a really important point, with so little to discern each console from the other and multi-platform being king, it is kind of nice to know that you won't be wasting your money purchasing either. I feel like as time has crept on I have started to feel like I lost out though as most of my main gaming buddies have migrated to PS3 and to join them I am going to have to buy a new television as well as a new console. And that certainly isn't going to happen any time soon.
Twig Posted November 3, 2010 Just close this thread and forget I ever said anything. Didn't know Fable was Xbox exclusive, though. Splinter Cell too? Fable was released on the original Xbox, and then much later on PC, as The Lost Chapters. Fable II was/is exclusive to the Xbox 360. Fable III is currently exclusive to the Xbox 360, but is supposedly coming to PC at a later date. So, it might as well be Xbox-exclusive, since most people probably aren't willing to wait for the PC releases, but technically it is only... partially exclusive. I'm sure it all makes perfect sense in someone's head at Microsoft. Yes. Also, FWIW: I had a 360, and got fed up with the pay-to-play-online shit, as well as most of the games I wanted that were "exclusive" to 360 eventually coming to PC. Exceptions: Banjo-Kazooie, the aforementioned Fable II, Alan Wake, and others... but I can live without that small group of games, so oh well. I would love a PS3, though. Its exclusives are so much more enticing and exciting and etc. I bought and loved every (except the last) Ratchet & Clank game on PS2. I miss having those games. ):
juv3nal Posted November 3, 2010 I have both. I've had the 360 for longer, but because I prefer the PS3 controller and am a cheapskate when it comes to online, I use the PS3 way more. The 360 is basically my fable/mass effect/xbla exclusive box and the PS3 for everything else. If you wanted an excuse to argue in favor of the the 360, I'd probably toss Forza in there. GT5 could end up being better, but it's by no means a sure thing and it's taking its sweet time to show up.

All 3 Forza games have come out in the time since GT4 came out, seriously it's a joke. For me exclusives on the 360 that are worth the time are: Halo, Forza, Fable (Though I'm waiting for the PC version of 3), Viva Pinata, Shadow Complex, 'Splosion Man, The Maw, Splinter Cell. On top of this there are a bunch of cool board game ports: Catan, Carcassonne, Ticket To Ride.
miffy495 Posted November 3, 2010 I have both and get much more use out of my 360, but that's mostly because I prefer the controller. Really, between the two there isn't THAT much difference. I enjoy LBP and Ratchet, but I also really like Forza and Fable, so the exclusives balance out. Honestly though, there are so few of them that it doesn't make that much of a difference. For me, it came down to controller preference. I also bought a few multiplatform games for my PS3, but that was during the month when my 360 was out being de-red-ringed. Cigol Posted November 4, 2010 I only have a PS3 and the PS3 has no games lol God of War III, God of War Collection Heavenly Sword Heavy Rain infamous, Infamous 2 Killzone 2, Killzone 3 LittleBigPlanet, LittleBigPlanet 2 Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots Motorstorm, Motorstorm: Pacific Rift, Motorstorm 3: Apocalypse Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction, Ratchet & Clank: Quest for Booty, Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time Resistance, Resistance 2, Resistance 3 Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves MLB 09: The Show, MLB 10: The Show WipEout HD Fury Valkyria Chronicles Gran Turismo 5: Prologue, Gran Turismo 5 Yakuza 3, Yakuza 4 Disgaea 3, Disgaea 4 EyePet Afrika / Hakuna Matata 3D Dot Game Heroes White Knight Chronicles, White Knight Chronicles 2 Buzz! The last Guardian, and the ICO/SOTC collection will probably be worth a look when they are released too, but that's pure speculation on my part As for the XBOX, from the perspective of someone who doesn't have one and can't afford to have one, the exclusive games that stick out to me are; Forza, Alan Wake*, Project Gotham Racing, Gears of War, Halo, Limbo*, Fable*, Dead Rising & Banjo-Kazooie. *these titles have 'PC possibility!' hanging over their heads which, in my feeble mind at least devalues their selling power (whether it's true or not). The only one that would really tempt me is Forza. I know if I had an XBOX I'd be playing and appreciating the rest of its catalogue but they just aren't system sellers to me on a personal level. Forza was, but the price of buying the system, the online component, the game itself and then having to replace my existing G25 setup with a new one that was compatible made it very hard to justify - especially with GT5 (seemingly) around the corner. The way it positioned itself in relation to GT and the foul ups with all the lies and PR spin didn't exactly endear me to the franchise in the end either. SWEET TIME, SWEET TIME?! All 3 Forza games have come out in the time since GT4 came out, seriously it's a joke. It's only a joke if you ignore what Polyphony did in the same period of time (which was release less games and make oodles more money). If it's not out at the end of the year, which I think it will be, then it's obviously a bit of a shambles, but at the end of the day all of that disappointment / scorn will be rendered moot on release. It's not how long it takes, but how good it is.
brkl Posted November 4, 2010 Well, I guess Uncharted 2 is supposed to be interesting, though I haven't bought that one. I tried the first one's demo and the combat was a chore. HD movies look really nice, though! I just ordered a The Prisoner (1967) Blu-ray set which is supposed to look really good since it was shot in 35mm film, and I can't wait! Orv Posted November 4, 2010 I own a single console, and a single game for it. PS3 Demon's Souls I don't really see any need to get a 360, because things like Halo, Fable and the like don't exactly tickle my funny-bone. Yeah, I admit, I wouldn't mind some GoW (I really enjoyed the first one on PC), but that's about it. ('sides, I can just go push my roommate out the window and use his Xbox should I feel the need.) I'll stick with Demon's Souls and I'll grab LBP2 when it hits. Oh, and probably M.A.G. at some point. (Edit: Oh! DUST 514 if that concept ever actually manages to work.) Lu Posted November 7, 2010 giant list of games You do understand that I was being facetious, right?
Irishjohn Posted November 7, 2010 You know he was joking right? Nice list of games though. If you start counting XBLA you get a real difference between consoles. I still recommend the 360 to people who ask partly because I personally prefer it but also because it's cheaper. That's still a big deal. Meanwhile everyone who asks about Kinect or Move just get advised to buy a Wii. It's funny how the 360/PC relationship works. This forum is full of snappy PC gamers (I myself play a LOT more on PC than I did before discovering the podcast) but for a lot of people the 360+PC games are essentially exclusives to the 360 because they're only really considering the PS3 vs. 360 dynamic. Of the gaming consoles I'm lucky enough to own now (considering a modestly game-capable PC as a "console"), if I had to give one up it would be a toss up between the PS3 and the Wii. syntheticgerbil Posted November 7, 2010 I still don't have a 360. I need it to play some ports that were better before the PS3 came along (Still have never touched Ancel's King Kong) and there's still a lot of Live Arcade titles I'd love to play that are available no where else. I guess I don't have the motivation to buy some deluxe system for the sake of owning mostly downloadable titles.
