Bjorn Posted June 28, 2014 I normally don't like being pedantic, but I'm disappointed that none of you have spelled Zuul correctly. If you're into Rayman, I'd like to introduce a cool dude who will blow your mind. Despite how downright offensive the character is, Rayman Origins and Legends are swell games. syntheticgerbil Posted June 28, 2014 This is now the worst thread on Idlethumbs. No one is coming to my birthday party, since it's just going to be me, Rayman, and Globox eating popcorn and creating amazing levels in Rayman Designer for Windows 98. Also Sonic is dead on the back porch near the balloons.
Thrik Posted June 28, 2014 I guess I don't object to the cars all looking so similar, just that the short list is so strange. MK64 and the Wii version had fairly similar karts, but these ones just don't feel like they belong enough. The bikes seem fine. Also mechanically I feel like the modular cars makes me feel like the game lacks focus. I don't feel like its that exciting to play a specific character when their stats are so washed out by car and wheel choices. I experienced some analysis paralysis when I first saw that screen, and I've seen others hit it as well. I just feel previous versions have been stronger at character and car selection because they were quick decisions based on archetypes and not min-maxing stats like simulation racers. It didn't help the first few races I played I made terrible kart choices and the game was very hard to play. I have no complaints about the karts. There are more karts than Double Dash if you count the bikes and ATVs, which kind of remains my gold standard for a Mario Kart game — although MK8 is looking like a contender now I'm halfway through all the cups and have been doing a whole stack of (Fun!) online play. The karts all look pretty individual IMO, and the Wario Car's (kind of) return delighted me. I definitely agree that the stat thing can be overwhelming at first, but I very quickly realised what suits my play style best. I like the fact that I can choose a weight class (usually heavy) and then fine-tune the handling at the expense of top speed.
Bjorn Posted June 28, 2014 So technically only kinda on topic, since it's the PC version, but the wife and I started playing Rayman Legends last night. It's glorious, and a worthy addition to whatever platform you want to play it on. I can see myself getting into the daily/weekly runs for awhile.
Griddlelol Posted June 28, 2014 Yeah I played the demo again with my girlfriend. She loved it. It was difficult enough to keep her engaged, but nothing extreme. I really hate how Nintendo will make me pay £23 for a digital copy, when the most expensive physical I can find is £14.
BigJKO Posted June 29, 2014 Alright! Rayman Legends is amazing! Holy shit, this game looks good! And I love the levels so far! And the daily/weekly challenges! Ah, there's so much good stuff and I've only been at it for an hour or two. I like the framing better than Origins, with the paintings and such. It's less serious and much cuter and visually fun. But.. why are we still rescuing ladies every once in a world? It's the only character unlock that doesn't just happen when collecting lummies (lumlums? Whatever!) at least you're not literally rescuing them from a cage this time around! Also, I was about to declare the Murfy levels as boring after a couple of 'em.. until I tried the weekly Murfy challenge, showing me how excellent the mechanics are when they're just a bit harder and come at you fast enough. Still not my favorite. Anyway, this has so far been pretty damn excellent. I didn't think they had even more wackiness left in 'em after Origins, but they very much did! melmer Posted June 29, 2014 Oh man I've been thinking about buying one of these again. This summer drought is making me think crazy thoughts What dissuaded me this time is the £100 worth of extra peripherals I'd need to buy. My trail of thought reached the point where I was thinking I could play metroid prime 3 (I may already have... But I have no recollection) and smashed in to a mental brick wall with the realisation I would need to buy a wii wand? And nunchuck and I'd have to buy one of those pro controllers to actually enjoy playing Mario kart / bayonetta Edit: "new features such as using your ship in battle"huh, I guess I haven't played metroid prime 3. Man fuck nintendo
Thrik Posted June 29, 2014 FWIW, despite its goofy appearance the GamePad is a very comfortable controller that provides all the inputs of the Pro controller and more. I too figured I'd need one but in practice the GamePad is just fine — it's build quality is better than I was expecting too. I can't think of any games I'd need the Wiimote/Nunchuk for, but I have a few knocking around from my old Wii anyway. I guess I can use them for local MK8 multiplayer, although a Pro controller would fit the bill better.
melmer Posted June 29, 2014 That's good to hear, I'm a little ashamed to have written off the gamepad without every holding one ...and I'm pretty sure I have a friend I could borrow wii peripherals off Holy shit! I think I might be back on the wii u train whoo whoo
Merus Posted June 29, 2014 But.. why are we still rescuing ladies every once in a world? It's the only character unlock that doesn't just happen when collecting lummies (lumlums? Whatever!) at least you're not literally rescuing them from a cage this time around! I get the strong suspicion that this was changed mid-way through development as a result of some of the discussion going around about damsels in distress at the time. The levels don't really make sense as something you're doing to free people - they're static versions of the five challenge level themes - and they're still princesses, but they're themed after each world (including the SPY PRINCESS) and I guess they decided these characters should be unlocked from doing things in that world. Anyway, the best challenge mode is the Infinite Tower, the source of my only platinum result on the challenges.
Bjorn Posted June 29, 2014 Also, I was about to declare the Murfy levels as boring after a couple of 'em.. until I tried the weekly Murfy challenge, showing me how excellent the mechanics are when they're just a bit harder and come at you fast enough. Still not my favorite. I felt exactly the same way about the Murfy runs the first couple, but as I got used to them, I think they're better than my original impression. With the damsels thing, the first one at least (maybe all of them?), at least the princess rescues herself at the end rather than you rescuing her. Which is a slight improvement. Ultimately you don't do anything besides chase the bad guy. And you can play them as characters, another improvement. Overall it's moving in a good direction compared to Origins. I do miss the chest runs in Origins. I loved the pure flow state you could get into with those of not having to worry about any pickups or anything, and just focus on the run. They didn't have checkpoints either, so you had to make the whole run perfectly, which made them feel more rewarding when you got through one.
Griddlelol Posted June 29, 2014 Holy shit! I think I might be back on the wii u train whoo whoo Dooooo eeeeet! I have 100+ hours on my Wii U (albeit 30 are Netflix) since I got it. Fantastic machine, and there are a bunch of interesting out now or coming out soon.
Bjorn Posted June 30, 2014 I don't know if there is an official Rayman: Legend thread, so I'm just going to gush about it here. The post boss levels for each world are delightful. Like I don't remember the last time a game put a massive ear-to-ear grin on my face like two of those did tonight (the first two). Spoilering details for anyone who might want to walk into them blind. They are music oriented levels that become near rhythm games of jumping, attacking and sprinting, with notes punctuated by the actions you're taking. And a chorus of goblins sings Black Betty in the first one. It's so fucking good.
BigJKO Posted June 30, 2014 It's 'Black Betty' Auto-correct get you there? But yes, those end levels are absolutely fantastic and continue to be amazing! I'm very happy they decided to do away with the concept of lives entirely. Makes the game feel less frustrating even when it gets much, much harder.
Griddlelol Posted June 30, 2014 Bjorn, you described how I felt playing the demo. I really cannot wait to pick it up. My girlfriend has actually been bugging me to go and see if there are any cheap 2nd hand copies too. She's getting frustrated with Mario Kart now, as she's gotten skilled enough to do well, but then gets hit with a blue/red/green shell before she crosses the finish line in first place. I'm worried about potential controller spikes during rage quits.
melmer Posted June 30, 2014 So ive been watching a few on ebay and they're going for almost full price http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Nintendo-Wii-U-Premium-Pack-with-Nintendo-Land-32-GB-Black-Console-PAL-/281371912086?pt=UK_video games_video gameConsoles_video gameConsoles&hash=item418312a796 i like the look of this one as it come with a wii mote, but i'd only be saving myself like £20-£30 in the long run i might as well just pop down tesco's and buy it new
Griddlelol Posted June 30, 2014 I got mine on eBay for a really good price. I think it was £180 with a Wii remote. I sniped though. I sniped hard. Wow, that person really liked Trauma Agent. It's worth checking out HMV if you have one in your town, they're trying to ditch stock as some stores are closing down.
N1njaSquirrel Posted June 30, 2014 It's funny how people have changed their thoughts from 'oh I should buy x from GAME' to 'I should buy x from Tescos'. I guess this is another reason GAME is failing. That and it's overpriced and 9/10 times the staff are obnoxious knobs.
Griddlelol Posted June 30, 2014 I don't find the staff to be obnoxious, but I do find them pushy. I don't like being sold to by people, especially being pressured into something, it just makes me want to not buy from them and leave as fast as possible. Also how their bundles cost like £30-50 more than amazon because they shove a bunch of unnecessary crap in there. No I don't want the screen protector, extra stylus box, extra charger, carrying case and other crap that has your brand on it. I just want the console and a game. They can't take them out the bundle either, so off I go to ebay or amazon. The GAME where I lived as a teenager was actually pretty cool, there was a guy and girl who always worked there on weekends and would happily chat to you about games, without pressuring you. Not that I'd stand around and talk for ages, once I had the game clutched in my hands I was out of there so fast. I'm rather annoyed that the white PS4 is a GAME exclusive. melmer Posted June 30, 2014 WTF. i thought i'd be able to pick this up for a couple of quid
JonCole Posted June 30, 2014 Oh no, Prime Trilogy is indeed expensive. Here in the US, it was sold along with Xenoblade Chronicles at Gamestop at full retail years after launch. I believe it's still selling for $50 pre-owned, which is fairly hilarious since the quality of most used goods at Gamestop is middling to poor in my area.
Griddlelol Posted June 30, 2014 How is Xenoblade? I pretty much hate all JRPGs so I doubt I'd like it, but a lot of people outside the usual JRPG fans seem to enjoy it. The fact it's getting a sequel makes me interested. Looking at metacritic, all the reviews say "best JRPG..." which unfortunately means it's still a classical JRPG.
