ThunderPeel2001 Posted September 8, 2012 It seems that since DoubleFine helped made Kickstarter becomes mainstream, there's been an incredible influx of amazing, interesting, weird projects. It's really hard to stay informed about them all, and so you can sometimes miss things that you would love to get involved in. So in the spirit of the Fresh Indie Game Compendium Extraordinaire thread I thought it might be useful if one thread had simple info on KS projects that are interesting to the community, rather than having a shed load of different threads, some of which just disappear. That way, anyone can come to this thread and quickly see what new Kickstarter projects are of interest to Idle Thumbs community members, and hopefully not miss any projects that might be of real interest to them. As with the FIGCE thread, it seems to make sense if comments are placed in separate threads. Which is to say: If you want to discuss a Kickstarter, rather than just make people aware of it, post a separate thread for comments, too! It seems to make sense to post ANY projects that are of interest. Not just video game related ones, so I've put this in the Idle Banter forum. (If this is a bad idea, just close this thread, but I thought it might be a worth a shot.) I'll get us going: WINGS: DIRECTOR'S CUT By: Cinemaware Type: Video game! About: It's a HD/modern system reboot of the classic Amiga game "Wings". Why You Should Care: Because Wings was generally seen as Cinemaware's most successful game and it'd be really cool to have a HD version of it. Cinemaware also did Rocket Ranger, It Came From the Desert, and other such titles. If this is successful, there's more chance of seeing them realised, too. ThunderPeel2001 Posted September 8, 2012 CHARLIE KAUFMAN'S ANOMALISA By: Starburns Industries Type: Movie! About: This is a 40 minute stop-motion animation from the mind of Charlie Kaufman. Why You Should Care: Because Charlie Kaufman wrote "Being John Malkovitch", "Adaptation.", and "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" and the aim of this project is to allow his vision to be realised without any studio interference. Also, Dan Harmon is involved, and future projects from the studio will probably involve him, Luis CK and Robert Smeigel. This could be great! ThunderPeel2001 Posted September 8, 2012 FLAMING CARROT COMICS By: Bob Burden Type: Comic! About: This is a project to get the Flaming Carrot back in print. Why You Should Care: The Flaming Carrot was a surreal, funny and incredibly popular comic from the 80s and 90s. One month it even outsold Superman. A short spin-off series was made into the movie "Mystery Men" (the one with Ben Stiller and Janeane Garofalo). However, these comics have been out of print since the 90s. The original author has put together this Kickstarter to bring the first two volumes (totalling 350 pages) back into print in both Hardback and eBook editions. I've heard great things about this comic, but I've never had a chance to read it. This is a great opportunity to get them cheap, as well as helping support the original author. Roderick Posted September 8, 2012 I think it's a good idea, that way we won't get a topic for every Kickstarter out there. Really special ones like Planetary Annihilation can still get their own, but I doubt Wings would need one. I am also very, very much anticipating the moment Kickstarter integrates Paypal into its system and makes donating for credit card-less people much less of a hassle. ThunderPeel2001 Posted September 10, 2012 Yeah, some Kickstarters aren't necessarily worth a whole thread, but still may be of interest to peeps. I'll be updating this one as I come across things that are interesting. It'd be cool if others joined in, too.
Kolzig Posted October 27, 2012 KICK-HEART By: Production I.G. Type: Short movie about: This is a 10 minute anime movie from the mind of Masaaki Yuasa and Production I.G. Why You Should Care: Production I.G. has been around for 25 years and has created tv series and movies based on Ghost in the Shell franchise and lot of other excellent anime works. toblix Posted November 6, 2012 Elite: Dangerous By: Frontier Developments Type: Video game about: This is a project to make another Elite game Why You Should Care: I honestly don't know. It has trading. Kickstarter page: http://kck.st/YN6rVC Discussiont thread: http://www.idlethumbs.net/forums/topic/8216-elite-dangerous-kickstarter/
BigJKO Posted November 6, 2012 SIR, YOU ARE BEING HUNTED By: Big Robot Type: Video game! about: A survival game set in a procedurally generated rural Britain. Why You Should Care: It's from Jim Rossignol of Rock, Paper Shotgun. It's procedurally generated. It has robots. And it has coined the term "tweedpunk". ThunderPeel2001 Posted November 8, 2012 THE SMITH TAPES By: Howard Smith Type: Audio interviews about: A collection of ultra rare audio interviews from late-sixties/early-seventies. Why You Should Care: These interviews have apparently never been heard since they were first used, have just been sitting in a loft for the past 40 years, unlistened to. Subjects include: James Morrison, John Lennon and Yoko Ono, Lou Reed, Janis Joplin, Mick Jagger, George Harrison, Dennis Hopper, Eric Clapton, James Taylor, Jerry Garcia, Peter Townshend, and Hugh Hefner. Why You Might Not Care: They're releasing them in some uber-expensive, hand-made CD collection. Kinda sucks Link: http://kck.st/QKdIC1
ThunderPeel2001 Posted November 8, 2012 "The Goon" Movie By: Blur Studio Type: Storyreel -> Feature length film about: Help Kickstart a feature length Goon movie into action. Why You Should Care: This is based on the famous comic of the same name (not to be confused with that hockey movie) and DAVID FINCHER is involved in its production! (Personally that's enough of a reason for me, but you can see more at the link below.) Only 66 hours to go, and they haven't made their target! (Very close, though.) BigJKO Posted November 9, 2012 Backed that Goon movie now, I hope it makes it in the last days! (PS, your link goes to the Kickstarter for Kaufman's animated film)
BigJKO Posted November 9, 2012 Ormr - The Smart Image Editor By: Sad Cat Software Type: Software - Image Editing about: A smart image editor, sort of the next evolution of Photoshop. Why You Should Care: Because it might be a very nice, cheap alternative to Photoshop with a much nicer workflow. You can go back and non-destructively change every line/drawing/modification in your document. It's kind of hard to explain, just watch the video! syntheticgerbil Posted November 9, 2012 I helped fund it too, but I can't imagine that comic will ever be fit for American theatres. It's good, but it's continuously violent and wacky.
Twig Posted November 9, 2012 I've never heard of The Goon before, but the art is really great. I love it. I am pretty close to backing for that reason alone. I may also hunt down the comic, because it looks fun. Somebody push me over the edge. U:

vimes Posted November 10, 2012 Err, wait, with Goon, you're not financing the making of the movie, you're financing the storyboarding and story-reel making process - this might not translate into an actual movie.

elmuerte Posted November 12, 2012 Distance - A Next Generation Arcade Racer By: Refract Studios Type: Video game! about: An arcade racing game with a Tron'esque art style. Why You Should Care: Mutliplayer arcade racing in a Tron styled world with music pumping through your speakers. Also, very interesting HUD concept. Also, you can fly with your car. BigJKO Posted November 13, 2012 Err, wait, with Goon, you're not financing the making of the movie, you're financing the storyboarding and story-reel making process - this might not translate into an actual movie. Yes, a very realistic goal for a kickstarter. Making an entire full-feature animated film would be an enormously expensive, unrealistic kickstarter..
ThunderPeel2001 Posted November 17, 2012 LA GAME SPACE By: Some guys who want to create LA Game Space Type: Games (for you) / Game Space (for them) about: Donate $15 and get 30 experimental games by some cool bods / Help fund a new thing in LA Why You Should Care: This is a video games site, right? You get 30 games, not available anywhere else, made from indie game makers, media/net artists, etc. Who? How about the people who made Bit.Trip.Runner, the guys behind Aventure Time, the dude behind QWOP, and lots more who are probably even cooler, but I'm not "indie" enough to recognize. BONUS! You help create this awesome (looking) Game Space thing in Los Angeles, where they will try and do weird and wonderful things with games that have never been done before. Sounds cool to me!
