Nachimir Posted December 6, 2012 As Thunder said, this is kind of like asking how to have conversations. Think about stuff, discuss it. What forums you should be a part of depends on who you want to get to know and what type of community you want to be in. TIGSource, Super Friendship Club, Klik of The Month Klub, The Chaos Engine, Quarter To Three, and RLLMUK are all forums where you'll find gamer and game developer communities of various types. Find where you fit best, and get on with it. Idle Thumbs is good because you generally find literate, switched on gamers and developers with intelligent opinions. Also: Fuck not swearing. Get to know a community rather than laying down your own rules. Twitter is also a great place to get to know game developers.

Orv Posted December 7, 2012 Well you can spin, and then in the showcase stage you can disregard a showcase. The OR doesn't really factor into it I admit.

subbes Posted December 7, 2012 I had the number disabled because I was only ever getting complaints. Apparently I'm a bad poster and do not contribute to this forum! Whee! P.S. no joke, an insect just tried to fly into my ear and I jumped and almost dropped my laptop on the floor. Augh! Insects divebombing my lugholes give me the creeps. They're worse than clutter. Roderick Posted December 7, 2012 Twitter is awful for getting to know game developers. All Tim Shaffer does is post joke after joke, nothing serious from that guy.
Nachimir Posted December 7, 2012 Ah, well. Obviously not the big names. I've slowly got to know quite a few indie developers through it though. Often, I'll meet a developer at an event and we'll realise we follow each other on Twitter already.

I just had no idea what the developers were talking about when it came to specifics; I always thought they were talking about adding more physical pages to a forum, or somethng. I just don't know how talking about video games (constructively or otherwise) will get me into the game industry. Seems fairly straightforward to me: you get into the game industry by knowing people who can vouch for your excellence, and the easiest way to socialise with them and have them think you are excellent is by being on the same forum as them and saying interesting things. The bit where it backfires is if you hang out on the same forum as them and you say something embarrassing.
BigJKO Posted December 7, 2012 Have you considered applying for a job in the games industry? Seems like the most straightforward way of getting in, to me..
