Knytt Underground: This game should be six feet under.

Recommended Posts

I just got Knytt Underground from my PSN+ account and...

I know many of us here love Nifflas games, but I LOATHE this one.

I don't even know where to start. The game has three chapters, one is like Knytt, the second is more or less NightSky and the third is more or less both?

As the human you can jump and climb, you can use glowy lights as temporary one use power ups, the white ones are for attacking enemies, the blue dash sideways, the yellow dash upwards and the green make you a ball of light that can fly for a few seconds. The ball bounces... and it has some magnetic powers, that's about it.

The game has minor things that wouldn't bug me, but when you combine them together... it's like a fecal smoothie, it looks like something you might want but it isn't.

-The first flaw is the now way too overused by indie "artsy-fartsy" games... Nearly everything is black, I don't care want deep message the blackness entails, but even Closure which was 98% black was prettier than this... Yuck! And this is from a guy who enjoys ZZT!

-@#$%'n fetch quests: Wow, this guy is insane, how did it think so many fetch quests would be fun? And there is much fluff, I don't care about spoiling this, but in one fetch quest you have to find an item to open a door, after going through the whole map, you can't find and return the door, only to find it open already and only to go search for the key again and only to not find it again and only to find.... that you had the key with you the whole time, the idiot fairy forgot he had another pocket... [Anger level: AVGN+Spoony+Grumps*infintiy]

In the third chapter it's just ridiculous, you need to boring fetch side quests as part as the main fetch quest. Collect three thingies to get one of the six thingies you need to get the thing of which you need another six to beat the game. You need almost as many items as in La-Mulana except none of them are used for anything except trading in for another item.

-The world is ridiculously huge and confusing... The game has teleporters, but you can only use them a limited number of times and you can fail while using them, wasting a teleportation crystal.

-No upgrades: I know this might seem stupid, but after playing for hours and hours and barely making any progress, the most minor upgrade would at least make the game less boring.

I just can't stand this game anymore, the map is bigger than Symphony of the Night, but that is it's main detriment. I can swallow a 40 minute game with no "gimmick" or "upgrade", but this map is just too big and full of nothing interesting between slightly less boring points. I can't think of anything good to say of this game, just go re-play Knytt and avoid this at all costs.

Or at least get in the next indie bundle...

Nifflas, I love your games, but this? :getmecoat
