Ecco the Dolphine Kickstarter

Recommended Posts

Looks totally shit! Try and make it through the entire video without tuning out. They lost me at 'we want to make something EPIC'

The perfect way to make a new Ecco the Dolphine game would be to copy journey to a fucking T. The game needs to be ambient and restrained. A perfect place to copy that multiplayer experience. If you want to have a post apocalyptic story, drip feed it throughout the game subtly with the last level in a submerged New York or whatever.

To be fair, they haven't actually revealed what the game will play like, but they had a 'how many fish have you eaten' meter on the UI. Why even is there a fucking UI!?

And no I don't want to play it on a fucking iPad

I hope this goes the way of the Dizzy kickstarter

fuck fuck fuckerty fuck fuck

I feel kind of horrible for finding that pitch video so funny.

I have absolutely no clear idea what the game they want to make is. They've invoked Ecco, showed a few seconds of an iPad tech demo/target video that looks nothing like Ecco, and then started talking about epic stories and song magic and dolphin internet and... then you read the text of the kickstarter and it's not much better.

They're pitching features like "EXPLORATION!" and "QUESTS!" and just... I guess you breed sea creatures and use them to solve puzzles, or something? They might try to make it an MMO? "If you have played the game Eve Online, think of an aquatic version of that game and you’d have a good idea how the Big Blue Online will work." What? What?

I remember playing both of the original two Ecco games with some cheats turned on, since they were incredibly punishing otherwise. Very tedious even though they had their moments, especially because it ended up being a game about weird underwater aliens. If I recall they gave me a bad ending on Ecco 2 for cheating, which I found to be complete asshole bullshit.

Never played the Dreamcast one outside of a boring demo. To many many utterances of the word, "epic" in this video. But they did not show tedious footage of dolphins nudging items around to solve puzzles and moving schools of fish around until air runs out, so maybe there's potential?

"Our goal is to create the most beautiful water and lighting effects ever seen." On an iPad game?!

UGH ALL I WANT IS A FULLY REALIZED UNDERWATER EXPLORATHON ON MY PERSONAL COMPUTER.

Something like Endless Ocean on Wii.

Sorry, that has nothing to do with this. ):

That's ugly though! I want one that looks good. Is that so much to ask?!

The pitch makes me think the game will be like a cross between SimLife and Aquanaut's Holiday. The "Creature Code Card" thing in the rewards sounds iffy... DLC-ish even?

That's what I was thinking, but I'm pretty sure kids would rather buy a toy shark and make that appear in the game than a simple card with a code in it... We could do that with Barcode Battler ages ago, kinda.

I remember Ecco being terrifying as a kid. For whatever reason that game evoked claustrophobia and fear of endlessly deep oceans really well.

The worst pitch by far was the one from the creators of Wizardry. It was very quickly changed so you can't see it anymore on the canceled project page but the original pitch was the most generic garbage. It actually was a list of bullet points of the most basic rpg elements written as if they had just invented the next evolution of the genre. Like "Go on Quests!", "Has NPCs!", "Gain Levels!". The original title of the kickstarter was also "Old School RPG" but eventually got a bland name on top of that. Didn't help and was canceled shortly after.
