melmer Posted February 12, 2014 I've noticed there has been lots of game development chat around here lately. From people just wanting to share ideas about games through to people taking their fledgling leap in to game development. I've also noticed lots of people in the industry are appearing in the 'Hi new members thread' I was just thinking if you guys thought a 'games devepoment discussion' section on this forum would be welcome? And if it would have any legs Create a hive for all the game makers out there. It may attract a new crowd of game developers to the forums, which'll in turn attract more video game enthusiasts to join as it's cool to socialise with people in the industry. These would feed into each other pushing the idle thumbs community and brand to new heights until it finally implodes on itself. Yeah terrible idea What do you guys think? Just seems like a logically expansion to me. Especially with the majority of the thumbs crew starting up campo santo, this place is now an indie development hot bed and that shits gonna rub off on the community. Dewar Posted February 13, 2014 We discussed it in one of those threads and I think the general thought was to make sure that this thing has legs before we split off a new section. It's easy enough to move threads to a new section and start new threads there, but much harder to take a forum section and then collapse it back to threads. Though there are forum sections out there that don't get a lot of use as it is, and having a section created means we could hide it behind the registration wall to reduce the number of folks coming in and stealing ideas I guess? darthbator Posted February 13, 2014 Indie Game : The Forum I would post there all the time!
Murdoc Posted February 13, 2014 I lurk here more often these days after I stopped listening to the podcast, but I'd probably post in game development since you guys are cool.

Twig Posted February 13, 2014 I think it was Jake who said we should probably hold off until we see how far the Amateur Game Making thread takes us and how permanent it feels. Better to move all that stuff into a new forum later than to start up a new forum now and it end up being worthless. That said, I'm of the mind that separating it into its own forum might actually encourage even more discussion. Whether it will generated enough, I'm not sure. (ie: gamemaker stuff, unity stuff, plus the projects that people are trying to get off the ground).

I guess the problem I see happening is that, while there are a lot of strands, there aren't actually that many people regularly posting. If we split all of those strands off into their own threads, each thread might end up being like two people goign back and forth and no one else ever seeing it happen and feeling the need to jump in. Worst case: it's just one person posting updates for their personal project and no one responding. But then again I overthink everything.

SecretAsianMan Posted February 13, 2014 I haven't posted much in the Amateur game thread because I haven't had a lot of free time lately, but I would support a new forum for it. There have already been enough discussions of Unity, Gamemaker, and various individual projects within that single thread that I'm having a hard time keeping things straight. I think a separate forum might be good because then we won't be stepping on each other's toes so much.
Dewar Posted February 13, 2014 Years back on the PA forums, they had megathreads for each of the major systems which basically wandered around between different gaming topics and also many non-gaming topics. Eventually, they were outlawed and each different game was supposed to create their own thread. This ended up with a ton of threads with 5-10 posts in them, and then one or two larger threads for the multiplayer games of the moment. I had a lot more fun posting in one miandering thread personally, and none of the other threads ever captured the same conversation magic that the megathreads did. Fair enough, but, and I realize I might be a fringe case here, but I have a lot more time to discuss game development than actually developing a game. The Amateur Game Making thread seems a little more focused on the specifics and minutia of game development (IE: I saw some code on there for something) Super cool stuff, but for a single thread it's hard to parse the conversation, with everything else that's going on there. I suppose that's a good point, but I see no reason not to just make a thread devoted to whatever it is you wanna talk about! I hardly think anyone would hold it against you. Besides, the more active threads on game dev there are, the more likely it is we'll NEED to make a new forum for it.
Murdoc Posted February 13, 2014 Yeah, understood it shouldn't be the wild west, but I guess my point was just consider the posts in amateur game making night could be several threads already. Not demanding anything now, just showing support that a separate forum for this stuff would be cool and probably needed, if not now, but the near future. tabacco Posted February 14, 2014 I'm going to try and set something up when I get home tonight. I probably won't put it behind the registration wall, though, unless people really see the value in that. It doesn't seem as spam-attractive to me as multiplayer info. Thoughts? clyde Posted February 14, 2014 What's the sub-forum going to be called?
Twig Posted February 14, 2014 I think leaving it public is viewable to the unregistered because it would hopefully attract more cool like-minded people if they see that it's active. U: Also call the forum Cool Rad Game Dev. (Don't do that.)
darthbator Posted February 14, 2014 Are you really going to put that forum up on Dishonored Presidents day?
clyde Posted February 14, 2014 My vote is for:"Game Development"
osmosisch Posted February 14, 2014 I think you'd miss a lot of interesting cross-fertilisation by having everything split up into separate threads in a subforum. The amateur thread is awesome precisely because there's so many different things going on. I'd vote for keeping things contained to a large thread or two until people actually complain about the volume, which I don't think is going to happen soon. Merus Posted February 14, 2014 Yeah, I agree it's not yet at the point where a separate subforum would be beneficial.
melmer Posted February 14, 2014 "Video Gaming Developing" Oops, sorry didn't see we were on page 2 My 2 cents, I honestly don't know which way it would go. I think we'd need the thumbs to plug it a few times on the cast in hopes new people will join Maybe we need 50+ forum members to proclaim/promise to keep the forum active reply with I AM SPARTICUS if you are in To be honest I don't think I'd use it much
ihavefivehat Posted February 14, 2014 Fair enough, I would be in favor of it but then I'm a pretty low-frequency poster as it is.
