Humble Bundle subscription service

Recommended Posts

EA just announced their new subscription based service 'Access' on the Xbox One. Their plan is that people will pay a set amount, monthly or annually, to gain access to currently 4 of their titles on the console and early access and discounts on some of their upcoming games. In light of this I had an idea for a similar service that Humble could provide for PC users.

You would pay Humble a set amount to receive a couple of new indie titles every month for your PC. I think that it would be great to give smaller games and their developers recognition. As well as this, an added incentive to subscribe would be that a small junk of the money that you are paying would go to a new charity every month that is chosen by the user in a poll on the Humble website.

I would definitely pay for this and I think that it would be a great money making idea for Humble.

It sounds good from a consumer side. You'd get access to a library of good indie games for a cheap monthly price. I don't know how good it would be for developers in the long run. From what I understand, inclusion in a humble bundle is good for a burst of cash from sales, and then a boost in name recognition to drive further sales. By tying a game to a humble subscription service, I bet devs would feel like they'd be devaluing their game, possibly prematurely.

Yeah I understand but to tackle this they could mainly include older games after of just before a dev has released their new game to create 'hype' for it.

I'd love it if someone like Venus Patrol did this in combination with their magazine. I used to get Playstation Magazine just for the demo-discs; seems like a similar appeal.

One thing I'd really like the service to include is a central discussion-hub for the games as they come out. I think a big opportunity for a service like this is just having lots of people looking at the same game at the same time regardless of when it came out in other channels.

Good point, it would get people talking about the game. Say Game X is an amazing game but it has a really abstract concept so people just ignore it because people think that it looks bad but when it is given to people they play because they get given it and it turns out that it is really good.

And in some cases, participating in an active discussion about Game X is a good way to discover what is great about it.
