A Super Fun Quiz for everyone!

Yeah, the Japanese version had an extra sound chip in it so the music sounds unusually lush for an 8-bit game.

Well, #14 is apparently

while #15 is

You kind of gave away too much there, atte.

Yeah I knew those last two would be pretty easy to find based on the clues but I thought it might take a while until someone familiar with Amiga games gave a listen, so now we can close this case fully completed!

Wow, case closed 100%? Great work, gumshoes.

Hell with it, I see no reason not to keep things rolling...

2002 was a weird year for games! I know having done my own top ten lists in the past that this is one I've struggled on perhaps more than any other, so maybe I'm just personally not a fan. Don't let that dissuade you from playing, though, as I had fun making this quiz and am getting more and more smugly self-satisfied at the ways in which I tie tracks into one another as a playlist. And if that's not the true goal of these things, what is?

Meanwhile, here are the answers to the 2001 quiz!

Is anyone else starting to get real confused keeping track of all this stuff?

I might be wrong about the track for 12, but I think I got the game right at least.

Another year where I was not playing any video games. So tough, anything I play from this year would have been way after the fact, looking at this list of 2002 releases especially.

However,

#9 is

3 sounds awesome, but I have no idea what it is. I figured Wind Waker would be somewhere on this list but I don't hear it anywhere.

Yay! #19 is

I started expecting this one to show up for a 2002 selection after I thought it was released in 2001 and didn't hear it. :)

Yeah that is one of the main reasons I like making these too.

#4 sounds like something out of

but I'm not sure if that's right, or if it is right which track it would be.

The undisputed master of Nintendo. Maybe I should make it a personal goal to try to slip one by you at some point. You're even right about being wrong on twelve.

Don't sell yourself short! I've probably personally played the fewest of these games too, come to think, and I wouldn't have gotten this one!

I really love it when people are able to get answers just like that, in a flash of revelation. That's what the quiz is all about - the moment of realization that a certain song is just indelibly embedded into your memory for life (in, you know, a good way).

Yup! I found this mislabeled, but your title is correct! Well done!

You win the unofficial prize of finding my preexisting favorite track of this year's quiz with number fourteen! Yay!

That's unfortunately incorrect, but so few people bother to take potentially wrong guesses that I'm genuinely glad you tried!

I swear I know #10, but I think I might be getting it mixed up with a tune from Rayman 2. Argghhhh. I thought maybe Ratchet and Clank because I played that multiple times but I don't think it matches up.

#4 had me stumped for a while, as I knew I'd heard it a lot but couldn't quite place it. Cue something of a eureka moment when I realised it's...

Confirmed by the cover hint, 8 is from

Correct! Nicely done. You're a victim of your past successes, though, Horse Bag - I expected more than one from you!

That's the game! Still looking for the track.

2002 is looking to be a difficult one!

I didn't know the pictures actually referred to blurry spots of the covers.

That said, I still couldn't figure out what #10 is. Perhaps I have never actually heard it.

Sorry, back in 2002 I only had ears for the Jet Set Radio Future soundtrack.

Maybe I'm not alone in thinking 2002 was generally an off year for the industry.

Awesome guess. Right composer (Alexander Brandon), wrong game!

It's from Tyrian made by Epic Megagames.

edit: oh, Brandon was only Jazz 2 not 1. Oh well, you set me on the right track.

Oh haha, I sort of know that guy. I've talked to him a few times around town and he recently gave a speech to these kids at a game camp I worked at. To me it just sounded like early DOS Epic or Apogee games.

He's a legend, also did the soundtracks for Unreal Tournament and Deus Ex.
