Books for Work

Recommended Posts

I started a full time temp job this week and realized that I've gotten too used to reading with no real time limits -- I usually read before bed, and the unemployed lifestyle generally lets you just read until you realize how late it is. I looked through my bookshelf after work today and saw a collection of short stories I've been meaning to reread that can get me through next week, but I don't know what I'm going to do after that. I tried taking the book I was reading in with me, but ended up coming back from lunch late every time I tried to read my book while I was eating.

What kind of books do people read while they're on their break at work? What do y'all recommend that's in short-ish (I have an hour for lunch and can spend about 45 minutes of that with a book, so the short-ish has a lot of give), easily digestible chunks? I used to be able to pick things out for this pretty well, but that's apparently a skill that I've lost.

I don't have a chance to read during breaks, but I do read during my commute to and from work (about 20+20 min). I read basically whatever, since I find it relatively easy to catch up with the plot even in such short bursts.

Looking at my bookshelf, I don't have many short story collections or similar. Sherlock Holmes collections might work, though some of them are definitely longer than 45 minutes. I recently read Randall (xkcd) Munroe's What if? which I mostly enjoyed and which fits the requirements. There is also the Penguin Mini Modern Classics Box Set which, I'd imagine, is quite hard to find at this point. The individual books should be relatively hard to find, though.

If the problem is you losing track of time, well, maybe you can just set an alarm on your phone or something.

I tend to read the same things I always do because I usually remember where I'm up to.

All great collections of short stories expect for Smoke Gets, which is an exploration of death done in snippets.

I play Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup at lunch. Often i will find a spell book such as Book of Air or Book of Fire. Depending on my starting class I may have The Young Poisoners Handbook or Book of Hexes at hand.
