Merus Posted November 1, 2014 What a useful thread. (Christmas appears to be a much bigger deal in the UK than in the US or Australia, where don't get me wrong it's still a big deal, but the entertainment industry doesn't seem to be quite so busy.)
dibs Posted November 1, 2014 Thanksgiving is pretty offensive since not all of us celebrate it. Please keep this topic on Christmas. Also, how did you miss "Criminey It's CHRISTMAS!"?

James Posted November 1, 2014 On 11/1/2014 at 8:43 PM, Badfinger said: It is not Christmas.Quite. For a while at work people thought I hated Christmas, because I got so annoyed at people going on about it months in advance. In fact, the reverse is true. Christmas is my favourite time of year. But by that I mean actually Christmas, not the sixty-to-ninety days leading up to it. The time spent with family and the traditions from my childhood mean a lot to me. That's why I'd really rather not have it drawn out to the point of being fatiguing. If you spend more than a month each year anticipating Christmas, you're spending more than 10% of your life doing so. That seems mad to me. Sorry for this spoilsport rant, but I really do find the multi-month prelude draining and kind of obscene. God, how boring am I?

Badfinger Posted November 2, 2014 Not posting in it because it was far too early for Halloween! Also that thread was about Halloween, not claiming it WAS Halloween. I've made a couple of curt posts, so I want to say I don't have any negative feelings about Christmas. The fact that the "christmas season" begins the moment Halloween ends, and Halloween starts the first weekend kids are back in school is what I have negative feelings about. I enjoy the vibes I get from people about Christmas, and I understand why it's their favorite time of year. But it's so horribly commercialized, and so few people I know personally are engaged with it in any way beyond decorating and gift giving. I actively detest the music, though. Ben X Posted November 2, 2014 There you go, fixed the thread title for you. I think the way to solve the Christmas music problem would be to get 100 different contemporary artists and groups (of, say, Radiohead level of quality) to make one legitimately good Xmas-themed song each, so we wouldn't hear the same three songs over and over again. That said, you can't argue with Wiz(z)ard:
Twig Posted November 2, 2014 Yeah Christmas music legitimately makes me wish Christmas was just over. It's the worst goddamn thing humanity's ever invented.
Apelsin Posted November 2, 2014 I love some of it, despise some of it. My annoyance with the way christmas is handled fluctuates a bit from year to year it seems. I'm usually quite annoyed at how early the commercialism starts ramping up for its most sacred of holidays, but when I walked into my local Åhléns store to find it suddenly contained a section full of christmas-themed textiles, candles/candlesticks, ornaments, smellls... I was more amused than anything, and on subsequent visits I found it more nice than anything. I'll hate it once christmas rolls around again though.
Twig Posted November 2, 2014 When I got coffee on HALLOWEEN my cup was Christmas Decorated and I WAS SO MAD*. *I don't actually give a shit.
Ben X Posted November 2, 2014 Actually, I decided not to take your word for it, Badfinger, and went and checked: the first thing said in that Halloween thread was "it's Halloween". So I've changed my thread title back. IT'S CHRISTMAS EVERYONE WOOOO!
Smart Jason Posted November 2, 2014 The implicit assumption that everyone celebrates Thanksgiving is way less offensive than the assumption that people celebrate Christmas, because the latter takes for granted that you're part of some kooky co-opted solstice whereas the former does you the honor and privilege of including you in the trademark holiday of the Capital of Earth. SuperBiasedMan Posted November 2, 2014 My birthday is at the end of November, so I just always assume that Americans are celebrating it when they talk about Thanksgiving. It's very nice of you all.
