Yeah, I like the idea of mixing an action game with adventure gaming (something like StarCon2), but specifically schmup doesn't sound that attractive to me. Mostly because I'm not a big schmup fan.

Well, i like adventure games, and i love shoot em` ups, so i guess this game is kind of being made for me.

AHhhh schmup's are sooooo good! Especially now on the iPad. This game would be perfect for iPad and I really hope it reaches that stretch goal as I'd imagine it would be the optimum way of playing it.

I have been a little concerned about all the scared bullet hell babies. Grow a pair ;)

I was completely sold on this game until I read about the randomised narrative elements... why? I kinda wish they'd just create a linar well written adventure game, but I'll reserve judgement until I play it or at least know more about it. If the game can be completed in 2-3, fair enough, could work. If the adventure game parts are less solving puzzles and are actually just telltale style narrative choice stuff

My (limited) experience with high level bullet hell games is that they rely too much on memorization and familiarity with patterns than being able to skillfully adapt on the fly, which is fine, just not my type of game. Maybe that's a poor understanding.

If those shoot em up gifs on the kickstarter page turn you off, Please try either of these below, both free demo versions of quality shoot em ups from cave.

ESPGALUDA II HD LITE by CAVE CO.,LTD.

DoDonPachi Resurrection HD Lite by CAVE CO.,LTD.

I find the memorisation comes in to games like Ikuraga and radiant silver gun (which I don't really enjoy). Cave's bullet hell games are just seat of your pants reflexes. Well that's how i enjoy them anyway :) I'm sure people out there have memorised them, but that's the difference between just trying to survive the level or being skilled enough to attempt high scores.

I hate shmups but this looks like maybe it'll be wrapped in something that will make it fun. Kinda like Jamestown['s music].

It varies a lot, i think Cave's games tend to be fairly improvisational and are loads of fun because of it, for example. Certainly, there is memorization and practice, lots and lots of practice, but the tacitcs you can put into motion tend to be much more varied than in other games like... Well, let's say Ikaruga, which often feels like it's only a few steps removed from playing a rhythm game.

Sure wish Cave would put their games up on Steam.

Or really make them at all attainable in the western world.

Jamestown was actually the last shmup I played, and I liked a bunch of things about it. Except I wasn't able to beat the final stage, and I finally rage quit after 20 or so attempts, especially once I realized it was a multi-stage final boss fight. It had like 4 or 5 difficulties, but on the last few stages, it made you play on Hard. It just felt like a super unnecessary brick wall.

@Mington, I'm willing to try anything, and I don't know that I've ever given any of the Cave games a shot. I just know I've picked up a few shmups in bundles over the last few years, and Jamestown was the only one I enjoyed at all, and I still ended up hating it because of that last level.

Don't go into shmups specifically aiming to beat them, play for the high scores. It doesn't matter if you win, see how far you can get on one credit and try to optimize your play along the way. You'll get better faster and have more fun.

I never even beat the first level in Jamestown. Also when I say I liked it that means I was able to play it for more than five minutes before getting bored.

Also Drunken Robot Pornography is sorta like a first-person bullet-hell game so maybe that counts, too.

Jamestown is worth playing for the music alone. And beautiful, chunky pixels.

Also this looks really interesting but what if it's not a great SHMUP or a great adventure game? I really hope it will be but it seems like a lot of work

Looks like I should probably give them money, it seems to be a lot of dumb, retro fun.

Only reservation is the concept artist is Jeremie Perin, who while is an amazing animator and art director, makes some fucked up things I can't necessarily get behind. Luckily the final art is being executed by Christina Neophotistou, who is a great artist in her own right and should hopefully serve as some kind of filter.

This film maker who has become designer Don Thacker, unknown. Hmmm.
